Responsible AI Implementation: The First Step | Anne Cantera
What if the reason women are not being featured in mainstream AI coverage is not an oversight but a design choice? Anne Cantera has been building on the internet since 2001, went all in on AI before most people had heard of it, and left corporate when she realized the multi-agent systems she was building would be used as an excuse to fire people en masse. Today she runs Elementyl Intelligence, a responsible AI consultancy for small and mid-sized businesses, and she is building a movement to unite a million women in AI. She has a lot to say. And she is not afraid to say it.
SUMMARY & GUEST INTRO
Erica wrote the book on the AI gap - literally. And today she sits down with a woman who got there before she did. Anne Cantera has been building on the internet since 2001. A few years ago she had what she describes as a divine moment, saw a single post, and pivoted her entire career track overnight. She went all in on AI before most people knew what to call it. While others were sending out applications, she was the one getting called by recruiters nonstop. Now she is the founder and CEO of Elementyl Intelligence, a responsible AI consulting firm working with small and mid-sized businesses - a lot of them women-owned - to implement AI in ways that are honest, ethical, and actually fit the operation. She also created voiceofai.io, a free nonprofit platform with over 20 modules teaching AI fundamentals to anyone who wants to understand what is actually happening. And she is currently building Agent Modus, a visualization platform that helps businesses map how their AI systems work before any code is ever written. She has a lot to say. She is not afraid to say it. And the women in this audience are exactly the people who need to hear it.
INSIDE THE EPISODE
- The Lies About Women and AI. Anne is on her 31st podcast in six weeks - because the big mainstream media will not tell the truth about women in the space. They bring in celebrities who will follow the script. The script is that women are weak, absent, not in the space. What women actually want - security, child safety, governance, environmental accountability - flies in the face of the AI CEOs. Anne calls it suppression by design.
- AI as an Excuse to Fire People. One of the reasons Anne left corporate was the realization that the multi-agent systems she was building would not replace people - they would be used as an excuse to fire people en masse. She did not want that on her conscience. So she pivoted to use AI as an equalizer for the underserved instead. The Klarna story is exhibit A: they laid off 800 customer service agents, the AI went sideways, they hired them back within months.
- The Technology Is Fetal. Anne's read on where AI actually is: it is not in its infancy, it is fetal. The hubris-fueled, ego-driven corporate rush to deploy AI is setting teams up to fail and then blaming them. The design team using all their tokens by Wednesday instead of Friday. The chief AI officers drooling over whittling 20-person teams down to two. None of it is built on a realistic understanding of what the technology can and cannot do.
- Governance and Education: The First Step. For small and mid-sized businesses implementing AI responsibly, Anne starts with governance and education. Create your AI constitution. Decide what you will and will not do. Get clear on what the founder is about before any technology gets touched. If a founder wants to use AI to fire everyone, she does not take them as a client.
- The Million Women in AI March. Anne belongs to 50, 60, 70 women in AI groups. Hundreds of members here, thousands there. All disjointed. Her vision: unite a million women strong. Not to disband the existing groups - to create a union, a Jedi Council of women leading the movement with political and economic power behind them.
- People Are Starving for Companies That Are Decent. Anne's pattern recognition superpower - the same thing that got her into AI early - now tells her that a market shift is coming. People are done with unethical companies. They are looking for somewhere else to go. The decency gap is a business opportunity, and the companies that fill it are going to win.
- Don't Be Quiet. Anne's closing advice for the woman who has concerns but feels like she cannot opt out: state your needs. Companies respond to what customers tell them they want. If they know you will spend more with them when they provide what you are asking for, they will listen. Your needs will not get met if you do not say them out loud.
