What if the reason you are still exhausted - even though you clean up your diet, you exercise, you sleep seven or eight hours - is not a willpower problem but a biology problem? And what if the labs that told you everything is fine were actually comparing you to the average of an unhealthy population? Jessica Van Antoine was working 90-hour weeks inside a wellness company, masking everything with caffeine, until one day in the middle of a meeting she had to excuse herself, go to her office, and curl up under her desk and cry. Functional lab testing changed everything. And now she helps high-achieving female founders do the same.

SUMMARY & GUEST INTRO

Y'all know Erica is the woman who does all the things. The diet. The sleep. The Peloton. The red light therapy mat. The crystals on the floor. And is still dragging herself through the afternoon. If that sounds like you, Jessica Van Antoine is here to tell you it is not because you are not trying hard enough. It is because you have been guessing instead of testing. Jessica is the founder of Phoenix Functional Health, a performance health practice built specifically for high-achieving female founders. She has spent nearly two decades in health and wellness - as a massage therapist, Shiatsu practitioner, yoga and Qigong instructor - and now applies functional diagnostic nutrition to help women understand the root cause of what their body is actually doing and why. The conversation covers hormones, fatigue, the D.R.E.S.S. framework, why your doctor keeps telling you everything looks fine, and the one thing she wants every exhausted woman to do this week.

INSIDE THE EPISODE

  • Something Just Snapped. Jessica was working 90-hour weeks at a wellness company - studying Chinese medicine, building a 500-hour Shiatsu certification program, and doing it all simultaneously. In a meeting, she felt like glass was cracking inside her body. She excused herself, went to her office, and cried on the floor under her desk. Functional lab testing revealed the biological imbalances predisposing her to overwhelm, fragility, and irritability. And once she resourced her body, everything felt different - not because her workload changed, but because she felt bigger than her responsibilities.
  • Why Your Doctor Keeps Saying You're Fine. The normal ranges your traditional doctor uses are taken from the average of everyone who has ever taken that test - including a very unhealthy general population. Functional health uses a much narrower range of what actually constitutes optimal function. If you are not a significant outlier in one direction, you get told you are fine. Even if you are operating at 70% capacity instead of 95%.
  • Your Hormones Are Downstream of Something Else. Most people treat hormone imbalance as the root cause. Jessica treats it as the signal. What is actually causing the hormonal imbalance? Is it blood sugar? Gut inflammation? Adrenal exhaustion? The systems of the body don't operate in silos - and treating only the symptom without finding the source is exactly why so many approaches don't stick.
  • The D.R.E.S.S. Framework and Why Timing Matters. Diet, rest, exercise, stress reduction, supplementation - but personalized to what your labs actually show. One client was doing hour-long Peloton rides at 5pm and couldn't sleep. Moving the workout to the morning so her cortisol had time to come down was the only change. Now she sleeps. Jessica breaks down why this approach is completely different from generic wellness advice.
  • You're the Asset. The reason the grinding is working against you is that you are the main asset through which everything else runs. When you show up at your kid's soccer game physically present but mentally depleted - avoiding small talk because the idea is exhausting - everyone in your life gets less of you. Including yourself. Jessica's reframe: investing in yourself is not self-care. It is protecting the asset.
  • Stop Stacking Wellness Habits. High-achieving women do what they know to do when they have a problem. They buy the machine, the crystal, the supplement, the app. Without knowing what your body actually needs, you are just guessing and stacking habits that may not be moving the needle. The Founder Capacity Audit is how you find out what your body is actually asking for.
