This episode details a two-step chemical test used to identify the presence of sulfate ions in a solution.Ā 

First, dilute hydrochloric acid is added to eliminate any interfering carbonate ions.Ā 

Next, barium chloride is introduced to the solution.Ā 

If sulfate ions are present, they will react with the barium ions to form a characteristic white precipitate of barium sulfate.Ā 

This visible reaction confirms the existence of sulfates in the original sample.
