Identifying Ions: Halides š§Ŗ GCSE Chemistry Learning & Revision
This episode discusses how to identify halides.
To identify halide ions, in a solution, a two-step process is employed.Ā
First,Ā dilute nitric acid is added to eliminate any carbonate ionsĀ that could interfere with the subsequent test.
Following this,Ā silver nitrate is introduced.Ā The presence of halide ions is indicated by the formation of a precipitate;Ā silver chloride appears white, silver bromide is cream-coloured, and silver iodide presents pale yellow.Ā
These observations allow for theĀ identification of the specific halide anion present.
