139: Swinging Out of Your Shoes and Going Nowhere: Sequence, Separation and Real Distance
You give it absolutely everything. The bloke next to you makes a smooth, almost lazy swing and flies it 30 past you.
That's not a strength problem. It's an efficiency problem, and it's good news, because it means you've got distance sitting there that you simply aren't using yet.
Distance doesn't come from how hard you swing. It comes from how well you sequence and how much separation you create. Most amateurs aren't short on effort, they're short on efficiency, and swinging harder just makes the leak worse.
Shaun uses the whip analogy to explain what a well sequenced swing actually is, breaks down separation (the X factor), and covers the three places golfers leak power. Every one of them is trainable.
In this episode:
- Why the ball doesn't care how hard you tried
- The whip: the handle moves, energy travels down and multiplies, the tip snaps faster than anything your hand could do on its own
- The chain in your swing: ground into legs, legs drive hips, hips pull torso, torso pulls arms, arms sling the club
- Separation and the X factor: the gap between how far your shoulders turn and how far your hips turn, and why that gap is stored energy
- Leak 1: you can't separate. Locked mid-back, stiff hips, shoulders and hips turning as one block. No stretch, no spring, no stored energy
- Leak 2: you start the downswing with the wrong part. Firing arms and shoulders from the top dumps the energy before impact
- Leak 3: you can't use the ground. Without leg strength and stability you're leaving your single biggest power source on the table
- The client in his 60s outdriving single-figure players with a swing he describes as quiet and boring, and the 10 mph of clubhead speed he added
