Bonus Episode: ADHD, Modern Life, and the Systems That Help Us Thrive, Featuring Carol Pearlman
Carol Pearlman is a psychologist and one of the pioneers of cognitive behavioral treatment programs for adults with ADHD, where she's spent more than two decades developing, researching, and applying practical strategies for managing attention, time, and executive functioning. She later expanded that work to the general population through her healthy habits programs, and today she also consults with organizations and leaders on how to streamline workflows and work more efficiently. She's also the host of the podcast Healthy Habits for Life.
In this episode, Paul and Carol dig into why so many people today experience ADHD-like symptoms, and whether the problem is ADHD itself or what Ned Hallowell calls a “severe case of modern life.” They unpack how clinicians distinguish adult ADHD from the ordinary struggles of a distracted world, why medication can quiet the noise but can't teach you how to prioritize, and why the systems that help people thrive need to be tailored to how they actually work. They also explore why repeated failures with planners, habits, and productivity systems can create a lasting fear of trying again, and how changing the stories we tell ourselves can change our behavior. They close with a look at the modern workplace, the disappearance of traditional guardrails, and what leaders can do to give people the structure they need to thrive.
