The Seven Types of Pharisees, Chris' Surgery and Jesus' Questions, and Operatsye (Episode #257)
In this episode of The Jew and Gentile Podcast, Chris and Steve explore the Talmud’s fascinating—and often humorous—description of the Seven Types of Pharisees. Six represent outward, hypocritical religion: displaying good deeds for attention, delaying obedience with pious excuses, performing exaggerated acts of modesty, keeping score with God, or serving Him only out of fear. The seventh, however, is the God-loving Pharisee—someone whose obedience flows from sincere faith and genuine love for God. Chris and Steve also examine several thought-provoking questions Jesus asked in the Gospels, including, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” and “Why are you so afraid?”
The conversation then turns to modern antisemitism and the dangerous stereotype that Jewish people cannot experience hatred or discrimination because they are supposedly wealthy. Rep. Becca Balint recently recalled an unnamed congressional colleague dismissing antisemitism by claiming that “all the Jews are rich”—a statement that exposes how ancient prejudices continue to appear in modern political life. Finally, learn the Yiddish word of the day: אָפּעראַציע (operatsye), meaning “surgery,” along with כירורגיע (khirurgye), the Yiddish term for the medical practice or field of surgery.
