- Shoyn Fargesn— I forget
An elderly Yiddish-speaking man arrives at Ellis Island after a long and exhausting journey. Along the way, he has passed through so many processing centers—and been given so many different versions of his name—that by the time an immigration officer asks, “What is your name?” his mind goes completely blank.
Flustered, he mutters in Yiddish, “Shoyn fargesn,” meaning, “I’ve already forgotten.”
The officer nods, writes it down, and from that day forward, the man is known as Sean Ferguson.
