338. Who Better to Invest In Than You?
We invest in our patients, our practices, our homes, our children, and the people and animals we love—often without hesitation. But when it is time to invest in our own growth, support, joy, or dreams, we question it. We wait. We look for permission.
In this episode, Drs. Jessie Mahoney and Ni-Cheng Liang explore why it feels so difficult to invest in ourselves after medical training, even when we once invested years, money, time, energy, and faith in becoming physicians.
Through Ni-Cheng's decision to work with a paddle coach as she trains toward a Team USA dragon boat goal, they talk about support as a gift rather than a crutch; the power of someone who can see what we cannot yet see; and the difference between pursuing a credential and pursuing something because it brings us alive.
Your dreams do not need to come with a certification, a guarantee, or anyone else's approval to be worth your time, attention, resources, and support. The first step might be hiring a coach, trying a class, booking one exploratory appointment—or pausing long enough to rest and hear what you want.
In this episode:
-
Why we readily invest in others but hesitate to invest in ourselves
-
The permissions physicians often wait for
-
Why support is not a crutch
-
How a coach, trainer, or guide can help us see beyond our current identity
-
The value of structure, feedback, and someone who believes in us
-
Why dreams are not only for children, retirement, or "someday"
-
How rest and recharge can be the first investment in a dream
-
Small, "ridiculously unambitious" next steps that create momentum
