    42. Parent with Presence Instead of Worry

    31:01

Mindfulness and intention helps you show up as the present parent you want to be. Showing up with fear, as a protector, and/or striving to be the best parent, even when it comes from loving space, limits our capacity for both giving and receiving love. When we show up with mindful intention, possibilities open up for expansive love and connection.   Parenting is a long journey. One in which there are many seasons.  It’s important to not get caught up in the importance of each moment along the way.  When things don't go right, children learn from it.  When we worry about missing our children’s childhood, we actually miss it.   Our worry and fear comes from love, But it keeps us out of the moment and not grounded.   When you focus on how you want to FEEL as a parent, it is powerful. Do you want to feel connection, peace, presence, curiosity? What helps you feel these?   Where do they exist already?   When you feel overwhelmed and scared, can you ask helpful questions?  What would connection do?   What would peace do?  What would curiosity do?  What would presence do?   “When we heal ourselves, we heal our children's children”- Maya Angelou   Learn to Parent With Presence in Jessie's 7 week mindful living intensive.  Together we will explore mindful coaching tools and strategies to help you show up as the parent you want to be.  Enrollment opens Oct 15th.  Intensive will begin Nov 4th and end Dec 17th. There will be live coaching calls on Thursday evenings except Thanksgiving.    Learn to Parent with Presence through 1:1  mindful coaching https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/jessie-mahoney-md   Take care of  you- join mindful yoga - offered most Saturdays.  https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/mindful-yoga-zoomlink   If you are a woman physician, find peace, calm and clarity in your life, and return home as the better, more present  parent possible.  Joining Jessie on a mindful coaching, yoga, and culinary medicine retreat. https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/yoga-retreats   Join the Mindful Healthcare Collective Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/mindfulhealthcarecollective   Find out more about The Mindful Healers Podcast: https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/mindful-healers-podcast *Nothing in this episode should be considered medical advice

    41. Connecting Despite Differences

    28:38

In this episode we offer mindful tools and strategies when encountering those with different beliefs that help you connect despite differences. Exploration with curiosity is a mindful way for mutual understanding. Reminding you that differences are a normal and beautiful part of the human spectrum of experience.    What’s your intention? What would Connection Do? What would Understanding do? How are you alike?   We can treat others as we would want them to treat us, with respect, especially when there are differences in beliefs and opinions. We are experts over our own lives, and others the experts of their own lives. We cannot control the thoughts or actions of others.   However we can compassionately have an open dialogue with others even if we disagree.    The episode offers a reflection exercise on how you usually react during difficult communications. We offer how noticing our emotions and body sensations during the difficulty and asking that of the one we disagree with might be the start of using mindful communication to hold space for differences. Letting curiosity be a foundation with active listening can shift the difficulty into opening and understanding.    Common humanity exists in wanting to be healthy, safe, and happy and that most, ourselves included, are doing the best they can.    If you are part of the healthcare community and have not joined us at the Mindful healthcare Collective, come join us.  We continue to offer free weekly online wellness offerings for healers. 40. Self-Compassion with Special Guest Dr. Steven Hickman

    42:51

In today’s episode, Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang interviews special guest, Dr. Steven Hickman, psychologist, internationally renowned mindfulness and mindful self-compassion teacher, and now author of his new book, Self-Compassion for Dummies. Steve is the Founding Executive Director of the UCSD Center for Mindfulness and is the Executive Director of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.  The definitions of empathy, compassion, and self-compassion are covered. Self-compassion as defined by Dr. Kristin Neff, includes mindfulness, common humanity, and kindness towards self.  Steve provides insights on how self-compassion can be used to move us through the heightened stressors and difficult emotions that many, especially healthcare professionals, are experiencing currently.  He reminds us of our shared common humanity and how we can tap into that fact as a way to connect with others, even those who disagree with us.  He offers the statement from the Mindful Self-Compassion curriculum: “Everyone is on their own life journey I am not the cause of this person’s suffering, nor is it entirely within my power to make it go away even though I wish I could. Moments like these can be difficult to bear, yet I may still try to help if I can.”  The Mindful Moment offering is the Self-Compassion Break, to be used in moments of difficulty.    You can get a copy of Self-Compassion for Dummies here https://bookshop.org/books/self-compassion-for-dummies/9781119796688 or at any major book seller.  For more on Mindful-Self Compassion: https://centerformsc.org And Dr. Kristin Neff’s website:  https://self-compassion.org   For more mindfulness resources please join us at https://mindfulhealthcarecollective.com where we continue to provide free weekly wellness offerings.

    39. Give Yourself Permission

    30:08

You are the utmost authority on your own life  What is it ok to allow yourself or "approve" yourself to do?  What rules do you have for yourself?   Could you give yourself permission to be happy? Live an extraordinary life? Follow your authentic desires? Be yourself? Be different? Let others be themselves? Rest? Nourish yourself?   In a world where there are so many external, and at times chaotic factors that are out of our control, giving ourselves permission is a way of taking control.   Giving yourself permission is also an act of self-compassion.  What if you made a commitment to give yourself permission to take care of yourself?   What else do you need to give yourself permission to do? 38. Decisions Can Be Simple

    29:06

Decisions are a fork in the road. A pivot.  Do you always want to make the “best“ decision?    Do you spend time, energy, and lots of angsty emotion weighing your options? Do you think the “best” decision is the one that has the "best" outcome?  Do decisions torment you? Mindfulness creates a clear lens of the circumstances and the actual choices.  It helps you recognize when excessive rumination is preventing a decision from being made and it allows you to recognize when a decision needs to be made. MIndful coaching offers many useful tools for more easeful decision-making. Take a listen to discover them. You can choose to have your own back and be at peace with a decision you made- no matter the outcome.   If you feel conflicted, it is normal.    "Of course" regret, doubt, conflict, fear, and anxiety, come up--because you are human. If you are struggling with decisions, mindful coaching can help you learn to implement these strategies MBSR can also help by cultivating the skill of mindfulness to clean your lens of perspective to see things as they are.  Join the  Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course with Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang and Dr. Karin Schiff that starts 9/19.  Www.awakenbreath.org.  Learn more about coaching with Dr. Mahoney at https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/jessie-mahoney-md Join a mindful coaching and yoga retreat amidst the wildflowers. 37. Getting Help Helps

    32:21

Getting Help is a strength not a weakness.  Getting help is an act of kindness for you, and for others. You can go farther, faster with help. Help helps you and helps you help others.    “When have you been at your strongest?'' asked the boy ``When I dared to show my weakness.”   “What is the bravest thing you have ever said?”  “Help,” said the horse.   “Asking for help isn't giving up, '' said the horse, '' it's refusing to give up. “    - Charlie Mackasy   Coaching is a form of help.   Yoga is a form of help. Community is a form of help.   When has help helped? What keeps you from getting help when you need it? What if you wanted help rather than needed help?   Opportunities to get help: Join the  Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course with Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang and Dr. Karin Schiff starting 9/19.  Www.awakenbreath.org.    Sign up for Mindful coaching https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/jessie-mahoney-md   Join mindful yoga for healers- offered most Saturdays.  https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/mindful-yoga-zoomlink   Join a mindful coaching and yoga retreat amidst the wildflowers. 36. Kindness Is The Answer

    29:20

Title 36. Kindness Is The Answer You are worth the same kindness you give to others. The current pandemic is a radical opportunity to choose to show up with kindness- for ourselves and others. From a place of kindness to self, so much more is possible. Being kind to yourself is kind and is so much better than being mean to yourself. True kindness to self always ultimately leads to more efficiency, productivity, and possibility. Your relationship with yourself is your most important relationship.  It impacts all of your other relationships.  Nurture it. Grow it. Heal it.   When and where are you unkind to yourself? Who would you be, could you be, if you stopped being unkind to yourself? Could you treat yourself like you do others? What would you tell a friend or colleague if they were in the same situation? In difficult circumstances, can you ask yourself, “What would kindness do?” What is one thing you could do to be kind to yourself today? What if you committed to doing one random act of kindness for someone else? As an act of kindness, learn the skill of mindfulness in an in-depth way. 35. It’s OK To Not Be OK

    37:00

If you are feeling “not ok” right now, you are not alone.  In this episode, as the pandemic surges yet again, and tragedies are unfolding around the world, we invite you to pause and name what you are feeling. Naming emotions, especially difficult ones, is a tool to disarm the amygdala and soften the edges of difficulty.  Some other strategies to potentially help ease the struggle: Pause and be present with whatever “is” in this moment.  Be curious and notice.  Nourish yourself, offer yourself kindness and compassion, and ask good questions.  It should be different but you can still make a difference. 34. Loving Someone Who Struggles

    41:18

Relationships, when someone is struggling with their mental health, can be amazing and full of love.  When we change how we show up for them it can create space for the relationship to heal and even bloom. There are very real challenges when you love someone who struggles with their mental health.  If you are in this situation, you are not alone.    Mental health struggles are part of being human.  The pandemic has made mental health un-wellness for someone within a family almost ubiquitous. Today’s episode is a very real discussion of what you can do to ease your journey as a partner, parent, friend, child, or sibling --not if but when you find yourself in this situation.  “You can’t heal people you love. You can't make choices for them  You can't rescue them. You can promise that they won't journey alone. You can loan them your map.  But this trip is theirs”  - laura jean trueman   Mindfulness and coaching help you find groundedness, spaciousness, and clarity.  They help you pause and be present and show up with more acceptance, nonjudgment, compassion, and curiosity.  "You don’t have to attend every argument you are invited to “ Taking care of yourself and focusing on only what is in your control- you and the energy and approach you bring to the situation --are where your power over your experience lies. They can be a gift of healing for everyone. Ask yourself What would peace do? What would connection do? What would love do? For YOU and for your loved ones.
