In a deeply troubling sequence of events in September 2023, two young Black women—Maleesa Mooney (31) and Nichole “Nikki” Coats (32)—were found dead within days of each other in downtown Los Angeles apartments less than a mile apart. Mooney’s death has been classified a homicide, while Coats’ remains under investigation as a “suspicious” death. Their families had gone days without hearing from them, ultimately triggering welfare checks that led to their tragic discoveries.Because of the eerie parallels—same age range, same profession (models/part-time models), same geographic area, and nearly simultaneous deaths—the families are terrified a serial predator might be on the loose. Coats’ aunt remarked, “I believe it was murder… I feel that there’s a predator loose.” Mooney’s sister publicly decried the loss, vowing justice and warning others. Brandon Swanson, a 19-year-old college student from Minnesota, vanished on May 14, 2008, after his car got stuck in a ditch while he was driving home from a night out with friends. Believing he was near the town of Lynd, Brandon called his parents for help, but despite his directions, they couldn’t locate him. Frustrated, he decided to walk toward nearby lights he thought were in Lynd, keeping his father on the phone. Just after 2:30 a.m., he exclaimed, “Oh, shit!” and the line went silent—his last known words.The next day, authorities discovered that Brandon was actually near Porter, about 20 miles from where he believed he was. His car was found, but searches of the surrounding area, including the Yellow Medicine River, revealed no trace of him. Laura Bradbury and her family were at Joshua Tree national park to enjoy a camping trip. Her and her brother left the campsite to go to the bathroom. Her brother went inside to use the facilities and when he came out, his sister had vanished. After mobilizing the whole park and the search and rescue teams, no sign of her was found.
