Tara Leigh Calico was a 19-year-old student from Belen, New Mexico, who vanished on September 20, 1988 while on a routine solo bicycle ride. She left home around 9:30 a.m. for her familiar route along New Mexico State Road 47, had told her mother that she would need to be picked up by noon if she didn’t return, and was last seen near the Rio Communities Golf Course about 11:45 a.m. Her bright pink mountain bike and personal items—including a Walkman and cassette tape—were later found along her route, but she, the bike, and many other belongings never surfaced.
