Late on 8 January 2004, a woman calling herself Hasumi began posting to the Japanese message board 2channel after her usual train travelled far beyond its normal route and stopped at a deserted station she had never heard of. Over the next four hours, strangers online followed her journey through tunnels, distant drums, a terrifying encounter and finally a ride with a mysterious man, until Hasumi posted one final message and disappeared from the thread. Her story would become one of Japan’s most enduring internet legends and inspired an entire genre of mysterious “otherworld stations.”
