46 - Checking In

We recorded yesterday - Sunday, August 9th - early in the afternoon, about twelve hours before the Leafs lost game 5 3-0 without a miraculous comeback and we brought in our friend Rob Guy, team 3MI defenseman & big Leafs fan, to talk through the hopes he and Chuck shared going into the game. It's probably quite funny to listen to now. We also talk through the Habs upset over the Pens and more Qualifiers shocks while Mike is just hoping to see the Bruins win a game at some point (he's been waiting since frigging March) But Rob is from Twillingate, which is a finalist for Kraft Hockeyville this year with voting THIS WEEKEND! So we don't know if you guys heard, but there's this global pandemic thing that shut hockey down and has lead to some general malaise for a lot of people.  With no hockey and not being able to get together to record, we took some time off to focus on other stuff, but we've had enough of that and it's time to shout about hockey on the internet again. There's A LOT going on in the episode.  We use the Trade Deadline to announce a trade of our own; we're swapping out Brothers In Stereo's "The Worst Crowd" for In All Alone's "Highway 2, Calgary Nothing" and also chat to lead singer Patrick Kordyback about his hockey loving pop punk band In All Alone, being a reasonable Oilers fan, and his dad disowning him if he had played for the Flames. There's also a lot of trade deadline talk. Chuck & Mike rummage through the 30+ deadline deals and chat about what stands out to them. Speaking of stand outs, we couldn't have a hockey related conversation this week without talking about EBUG sweetheart Dave Ayres - the 42 year old zamboni driver who works for the Leafs and also beat them Saturday night. Then we talk to Mike Knuble. Oh man, Mike's career was insane. His first NHL game was Fight Night At The Joe - y'know that game between the Red Wings and Avs. From there he just picked off a checklist of being around huge hockey moments - and we make a realization that even he hadn't picked up on before. It looks like Chuck gets to tick off another "dream guest" box as we're joined by podcaster, co-host of Ice Surfing, and professional Maple Leafs fan Steve "Dangle" Glynn. We break down some of the biggest stories in hockey this week like the Laviolette firing, Williams heading back to Carolina, and just what the hell is happening with Montreal. Then our guest Jeff Sirkka gives TR a chance to reference the polish folk dance "the mazurka" in his intro so you know it's going to be a wild one. Jeff had a storied career in the minors and got just about as close as you can get to playing in the NHL without actually playing in the NHL.  We come back to chat about the World Juniors and Newfoundland's top NHL prospects, and get a little more negative than we should with a barroom hypothetical. We put out a call to you guys for your favourite good news hockey stories from 2019 for us to talk through as we look back on the year and here they are, with some of ours along the way. We also talk to some beauties - Nik Abbott hops on to talk about meeting Tim Thomas not long before he came out with the news of his struggles with post concussion syndrome. Then we've got Ray & Evan who made a pretty big impression with the goalie community when Ray posted a photo of Evan after he got drunk, decided his pads were too big, and chopped them down.
