Prince Andrew's February 2022 settlement with Virginia Roberts Giuffre marked a decisive turning point in the collapse of his standing within the British royal family, transforming what had once been a damaging scandal into a permanent stain on his public reputation. Giuffre had accused Andrew of sexually abusing her on three occasions when she was just 17 years old, alleging that Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell had trafficked her to the prince in London, New York, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Andrew spent years attempting to distance himself from the allegations, most notoriously during his disastrous 2019 BBC Newsnight interview, in which his explanations about his relationship with Epstein and his supposed inability to sweat attracted widespread ridicule. Although Andrew withdrew from public royal duties in November 2019, the legal pressure intensified when Giuffre filed her civil lawsuit in August 2021, placing him in the extraordinary position of potentially having to testify under oath about his relationship with a convicted sex offender. In January 2022, Queen Elizabeth II stripped her son of his honorary military appointments and royal patronages after a federal judge rejected his attempt to dismiss Giuffre's lawsuit.

Just weeks later, Andrew agreed to an undisclosed financial settlement, reportedly worth millions of dollars, which allowed him to avoid depositions, a public trial, and the possibility of having his relationship with Epstein and Maxwell examined in even greater detail. While the settlement included no admission of liability, Andrew acknowledged Giuffre's suffering and expressed regret over his association with Epstein, a remarkable reversal from his previous public efforts to discredit the accusations. Rather than restoring his reputation, the agreement reinforced the perception that Andrew had used his considerable wealth and privileged position to escape the scrutiny that a trial would have brought. The settlement also complicated the monarchy's efforts to rehabilitate him, making any meaningful return to royal duties increasingly unrealistic. What Andrew may have viewed as an opportunity to put the controversy behind him instead became one of the defining moments in his public downfall.
