Mahāsī Sayādaw is an important teacher in the modern insight meditation tradition. He deeply influenced how Buddhism and meditation are taught in the West, popularizing practices like noting/labeling, working the the breath in the abdomen, and making meditation accessible to laypeople.

With students such as Sayadaw U Pandita, Munindra, Dipa Ma, Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, and Sharon Salzberg, many of the methods we use in insight meditation in the West ultimately come from Mahāsī Sayādaw.

In this talk, we discuss his life and teachings. We will cover why he was so influential, how he came to build his practice, and what he actually taught.

There really is one resource for this style of meditation that stands above all. It is called the Manual of Insight (https://amzn.to/4x8fk0Q). It’s a dense book, but contains the full outline of his practice, methodology, and theory.
