Conferencing like it's 2025

Today we bring you an episode from the wild, with all the audio issues that are part of a recording in windy Copenhagen. That's right, with only slightly more than a year's delay you have the pleasure of listening to our review of AOM 2025, our first conference together as newly minted Assistant Professors. What we will discuss: - How have things changed at conferences as an Assistant Professor compared to being a Post Doc or PhD student - Why organize, rather than attend, a session at a conference? - What is the value of the non-academic portion of conferences? Desk Reject is back with a brand new name, a slightly new concept and even less gender diversity than before! For the first episodes, the hosts Alexander Staub, Philipp Becker and Marco Leander Rapp will be applying their newfound wisdom as freshly minted Assistant Professors at Esade, Utrecht University and University of Amsterdam to discuss the following topics: - How to appropriately deal with tragedy of co-workers and or students - Whether we are incentivized too much, not enough or just the right amount to produce research that appears surprising - How to handle smalltalk situation in class and at conferences

'Twas the best of times, 'twas the worst of times - in other words, this Desk Reject episode is another classic AOM on-the-road recording. The bad news off the top: Your 2 favorite hosts weren't able to make it, which is why you are left with Philipp and Alexander reporting from Boston. The good news is, we found some great replacements with Imke Reimers (Associate Professor at Cornell University), Frank Nagle (Assistant Professor at Harvard Business School) and Gordon Burtch (Associate Professor at Boston University) sharing actual valuable input on attending conferences and being a grad student. But let's start with the bad news - Philipp and Alexander have some thoughts after taking part in the conference circuit for over 4 years now. Among other things they will be sharing: - what continues to irk them about AOM in particular and conferences in general - what has become more important over time when attending conferences - what has become less relevant over time when attending conferences - some thoughts on job market interviews at conferences. Sommer bedeutet Konferenzsaison und Konferenzsaison bedeutet einen Haufen schlechter Präsentationen die man sich anhören muss, bis man endlich sein Meisterwerk vortragen kann. Von wall of text Folien zu übertrieben komplexen Modellpräsentationen und Charismagranaten überwiegt die Menge an Fails meist die Lichtblicke auf vielen Konferenzen. Die Desk Reject Hosts halten sich selbst natürlich für leuchtende Beispiele des rhetorischen Handwerks, weswegen sie passend für die Jahreszeit ein paar Dos und Dont's zusammengetragen haben. Nach inzwischen 3 Jahren Desk Reject und noch mehr Jahren Lehrerfahrung auf dem Buckel, ist es nun an der Zeit, dass das Team ihre geballte Erfahrung mit unseren viel erfahreneren ZuhörerInnen teilt. Insbesondere, welcher Wahnsinn entfesselt werden würde wenn man den Hosts volle Freiheit in der Kursgestaltung an eurer Universität geben würde. Das ausgerufene Thema lautet "Selbstvermarktung: Zeitverschwendung oder Notwendigkeit"; obwohl die Hosts seit über 50 Folgen eher aktive Selbstzerstörung betreiben. Wir wollten dieses einmalige Erlebnis natürlich festhalten und euch nicht vorenthalten. Die 50. Desk Reject Folge ist ein guter Zeitpunkt für die Cohosts um inne zu halten und zu reflektieren. Und mit Innehalten wird natürlich gemeint, sich gegenseitig in die Haare zu kriegen und 50 Minuten lang zu erklären, wie man das PhD System verbessern sollte. Das Thema Bubbles ist seit Jahren ein Thema, was sowohl die Medien als auch die Wissenschaft beschäftigt. Über Radikalisierung, Abschottung und Verbreitung von Falschinformation wurden bereits zahlreiche negative Auswirkungen dieses Phänomens aufgezeigt. Auch den Hosts ist die Tatsache nicht verborgen geblieben, dass sie sich womöglich selbst in ihrer ganz eigenen Blase befinden.
