A Petersfield alley hides a South American treasure

For over 20 years, Steep Film Society has been bringing world cinema, arthouse favourites and award-winning films to our corner of Hampshire. Based in the heart of the village, the society offers a regular programme of screenings that bring the community together to enjoy films you may not find in the multiplex. Shine Radio’s Laura Sheppard spoke with the Chair of Steep Film Society about the history of the group, how films are chosen, and why audiences keep coming back. With vibrant flavours, authentic recipes and a warm welcome, this family-run gem is fast becoming a local favourite. The You Trust runs three homes for about 15 people with a learning disability, off Borough Road.  There are different levels of need and the aim is to support as much independence as possible. This may mean residential care, supported living and living in the community.  Mike Waddington visited the Supported Living home of Rachel, Anne, Kelly and Colin in their bungalow (where they have a parrot called Ronnie). They told him about their life together and why it works for them and some of the challenges now and problems in the past. They do think there needs to be a greater understanding of learning disability but they like living in Petersfield Rob from The You Trust explains the system and how Supported Living works; funding comes through Hampshire County Council but with contributions based on benefits and income. Rescue dog Phil alerts his 22 year old handler, Felicity Brown, to impending collapse or sudden loss of consciousness.  His alerts give her time to sit, lie down or seek support. He is also trained to perform autism related tasks such as deep pressure therapy, locating named people or safe exits, and helping her avoid emotional dysregulation. Phil and Felicity are the first dual trained partnership collaboration between the assistance dog charities, Dogs for Autism and Medical Detection Dogs.  Felicity and her family trained and graduated Phil through the owner-trainer programme at Pawsable Assistance Dogs CI, and then applied for the owner trainer programme at Medical Detection Dogs, giving another dimension to Phil's skillset.  So a lot of firsts!  A big thank you to Felicity and her mum for talking to Dogs with Jobs.  And congratulations to the team on winning the Rescue Dog Medal of Honour at the the Dogs Making a Difference Awards in September 2025, organised by the excellent charity, Service Dogs UK.
