Barbarian: Having a bubba in the basement

The Ghouls get animated with a 2021 nod to rotoscoped dark-fantasy films of the 70's and 80's. Find out where we stand on this brutally gory endeavor during this week's Ghoul Pool.

After an eternity in the shadows, the Ghouls are back to drain every drop from this classic art-house gothic romance. Starring David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, and Catherine Deneuve. Based on the novel by Whitley Streiber, this film introduces an interesting and emotional take on what it means to be a vampire.

This week on Ghoul Pool we spend the night with Barbarian. Find out what we think of this 2022 suspense thriller by way of creature-feature. We also discuss a bit of other junk relating to other films and video games. 

On this new episode of Ghoul Pool we each discuss our thoughts on Brandon Cronenberg's long awaited, third feature length film Infinity Pool. Starring Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgård with an excellent score by Tim Hecker.  James and Em Foster are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors.

After a short hiatus the Ghouls are back to discuss the 2002 staple, The Ring, starring Naomi Watts and directed by Gore Verbinski. The Ring is actually an American remake of a 1998 Japanese film titled Ringu, and seems to be the film that started the boom in Japanese horror remakes. Shorty after the success of The Ring we started seeing films like The Grudge, One Missed Call, and Pulse all based on prior Japanese films. Was The Ring a banger, or were we just the perfect age for the film's intital release? 

This week on the pod we reverse the feed and bring this tale of two Vinces(and a J-Lo) into our own mindscapes. Find out what we thought of the Tarsem SIngh's 2000 Sci-fi/suspense thriller The Cell.

On this episode Derek, Nick, and Justin talk about the 2017 film Super Dark Times, written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. This film is an excellent window into the life of teenage boys growing up in the late 90's, with a dark twist that pushes an already crumbling friendship to the brink. Directed by Kevin Phillips, this film is an absolute masterpiece in tone, audio, and cinematography that all culminates into a dreamlike world of nostalgia. With a cast of all unknown (at the time) actors that absolutely smash it out of the park, we cannot recommend this one enough.
