Writing with Purpose Episode 79: Why the Word Practice Changes How We Heal in Nature with Ian Boyd
What changes when you stop seeing nature as somewhere you visit and start treating it like a relationship that needs regular care?
In this episode of the Writing with Purpose podcast, I'm joined by Ian Boyd, Chief Executive of Mind Over Mountains, the charity restoring mental health naturally by bringing together walking in nature, mindfulness, and time with professional coaches and counsellors. Ian brings over two decades of charity and community development experience to the role, from frontline youth work through to leading Self Help UK, the Notts County Foundation, and Trekstock. A lifelong outdoors enthusiast and ultramarathon runner, he sees time on the trails as essential to his own resilience.
This is a conversation about nature as daily maintenance rather than an occasional escape. Ian talks candidly about his own writing and running practice, the language we reach for when we try to explain what nature does for us, and what he is hoping to achieve for Mind Over Mountains and the wider social prescribing movement.
"I just know I'm a better human. I'm a better husband, I'm abetter father, I'm a better co-worker, I feel better in myself, I think I behave better. I think I think better." (Ian, on running)

PRACTICAL WISDOM
- Ian shares a practical angle foranyone wanting to build nature into daily life, including:
- Trying a different style of walk each week, from 52Ways to Walk, such as walking barefoot or walking beneath a full moon
- Writing an unsent letter to process a strong emotionbefore deciding whether to send it
- Practising mindfulness or a grounding techniquewherever there is a patch of grass, even a roundabout or canal path
- Setting small daily habits and looking back after amonth to notice the change
"I'm also always really struck by the expression practice. Doctors practice, counsellors practice, lots of professional people practice, and I think that's a really useful word actually in this conversation, to practice what you want to experience."
