Jazz Week

Summit County Prosecutor, Elliot Kolkovich, and advocates for victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence, are urging community members to believe victims who come forward with stories about their experiences. The annual "Start By Believing" campaign, which started in Akron on Wednesday, April 2, was created by End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI), whichaims to change the way society responds to disclosures of sexual violence and abuse. One of the organizations in our area that helps victims stand up to their abusers, is Community Legal Aid. Listen now, as Managing Attorney, Jeanne Charles, talks to Jeanne Destro about how they are using a grant from the Akron Community Foundation Women's Endowment Fund, to help pay for their efforts on behalf of victims who don't have the financial means to pay for a private attorney to represent them:

The University of Akron's School of Music Jazz Studies Department is having JazzWeek 25 next week, April 7-11. The festival takes place on and around the University of Akron campus.Theron Brown, School of Music Assistant Professor of Practice , joined Jeane Destro to talk about Jazz, the festival, and more.

As the worst measles outbreak in several years continues to spread throughout the US, including in Ashtabula County; thousands of job cuts at the federal Health and Human Services Department could make it more difficult for local public health agencies nationwide to both gather relevant statistics on the spread of the disease, and obtain all resources they need to deal with it. Because there were ten identified cases of Measles in Ohio as of last Tuesday, March 25; the Ohio Department of Health issued an advisory urging all parents to ensure their children are vaccinated against the disease. In the Akron area; Summit County Public Health has indicated they are getting a number of calls about it, and has information about measles and who should be vaccinated, listed on their website.
