(1) The New International Version and the Phillips translation of Heb. 2:17 renders “hilaskomai” as atonement, but it is translated reconciliation in the KJV, propitiation in the NASB and NKJV, and expiation in RSV and NEB. I will soon show that expiation is too weak of a word and should be better translated as propitiation.
(2) The theologian Origen and others have said the sacrifice of Jesus was paid to Satan, but that is contrary to Eph. 5:2 which says Christ gave Himself for us, an offering and sacrifice TO God.
(3) The penal substitutionary atonement is a THEOLOGICAL TERM for God’s provision to deal with human sin PERMANENTLY. The SUBSTITUTIONARY part of the atonement means that Jesus Christ died on the cross as a SUBSTITUTE for sinners. The PENAL part is that breaking God’s law resulted in a penalty that had to be paid. The BASIS of permanent atonement is the sacrifice offered by Jesus on the altar of the cross of Calvary and made available to people who have FAITH in Him.
(4) Death in Scripture normally refers to “separation.” There is physical death, spiritual death, and eternal death. Physical death is when the soul and spirit are separated from the physical body; spiritual death is when an individual is separated from God the giver of spiritual life; eternal death is when a person is separated from God after death eternally.
(5) The righteousness of God is the condition which God requires for humans to meet in order to come near to Him. That condition is MORAL PERFECTION. That condition far exceeds our capacity to meet because we are weak and sinful. So God has to grant another condition that we CAN meet on the basis of a condition that He has set for us by His fiat in order for us receive the gift of eternal life.
(6) Justification is the ACT by God of accounting/reckoning/imputing the believing sinner as righteous. This is a BOOK-KEEPING TERM. The righteousness of Christ is CREDITED to our account in a book in heaven.
