Caught in a Bad Situation
September 2, 2026 | Episode 5533
Host: Scott Smith
Episode Description
Life gets in the way. You plan well, do the work on yourself, and then something lands in your lap that doesn't feel right.
A few months ago I got tangled up in a mess I didn't create. Everybody worked hard to convince me I was wrong. I wasn't experienced enough. I didn't know the whole story. I stayed calm and made every choice on purpose.
Four and a half months later, I found out I was right. Then I quit, and it became a win for everybody.
Something is sitting on your back today. Let's get it off.
Featured Story
Last week I sat down with one of the principals in this whole thing. Four and a half months of being told I was too green to understand, that I was missing pieces of the story. He finally lifted his head and asked me what had happened.
So I told him. Calm. No finger-pointing. Just here's what you don't know.
You could watch it land. Then my phone started ringing with other leaders asking the same thing. So what really happened? Was it this?
They had a fire on their hands. What they hadn't worked out yet was that they were the arsonists.
Important Points
* When something feels off, and everyone around you insists it isn't, your gut is still data. Don't hand it over.
* You can stay in a bad situation on purpose, but only if you have a plan and make every move intentionally.
* Quitting isn't failing. It's what you do when the deal changes and staying costs you more than leaving ever will.
Memorable Quotes
* I found out that I was right, but it never feels right when you know you're right. It doesn't. It never does.
* They started the fires, and now they're running around trying to put them out. And I was caught in the middle of it.
* I'm really loyal, and I believe in people, so I'll hang in there to the end. But eventually I'm going to get out.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Name the thing that's sitting on your back and say out loud what your gut has been telling you about it for months.
* Stay calm and make every next move on purpose, giving the situation one honest chance to change before you go.
* If nothing changes, walk out clean, keep the relationships whole, and decide right then you're never going back.
