Scary Movie (2000)

We conclude that Halloween (1978) is foundational to the slasher genre but is flawed and does not hold up as a truly frightening film today. We describe how John Carpenter created a film that set the template for later horror. We note that Michael Myers is iconic but his unkillable nature strains credibility. We discuss strong moments and jump scares that work, and also many scenes that feel hokey or poorly staged. We say Donald Pleasance is a fine actor but miscast for the role. We end by giving the film low to middling ratings and saying we appreciate its historical importance despite its weaknesses.Visit Our Sponsor: https://dubby.gg10% Off Code: OURVERDICTSupport us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:[email protected] us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

We assert that Scream irrevocably redefined the horror genre by subverting canonical slasher conventions and by transforming familiar tropes into instruments of psychological disorientation. JJ contends that the film’s principal ingenuity resides in its duplicitous dramaturgy: an early indication of a primary perpetrator that the narrative subsequently dismantles, only to culminate in the revelation of a conspiratorial duality that renders conventional survival heuristics ineffectual. We examine how Kevin Williamson’s script, coupled with Wes Craven’s directorial acuity, cultivates robust character investment, engenders sustained suspense through meticulous timing, and marries a thematically resonant soundtrack to the film’s tonal architecture. JJ emphasizes the film’s synthesis of incisive writing, compelling performances, and meta-commentary on horror lore as the factors that precipitated its cultural and aesthetic impact. We conclude that, notwithstanding minor implausibilities, Scream merits the highest commendation and sustained reappraisal, and we awarded it a maximal rating in recognition of its enduring influence.Visit Our Sponsor: https://dubby.gg10% Off Code: OURVERDICTSupport us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:[email protected] us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

We conclude that Scary Movie is a disjointed and largely unsuccessful parody that attempts to satirize numerous films but fails to achieve coherence or sustained comic effect. We explain that the film aggregates references to more than twenty titles, and that this excess fragments the narrative and disrupts comedic timing. We acknowledge that a few segments, particularly those rooted in stereotype and racial comedy performed by the Wayans family, provoke genuine laughter, yet such moments are intermittent and do not redeem the whole. We criticize the film’s reliance on shock and sexual gags, which frequently register as awkward rather than humorous. We report that we assigned the film a very low score and do not plan to rewatch it. We note that patrons selected this viewing and that we will proceed with the rest of our October horror series, with Scream as the next focal point.Visit Our Sponsor: https://dubby.gg10% Off Code: OURVERDICTSupport us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:[email protected] us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

We conclude that 2001: A Space Odyssey is a seminal yet uneven film, and we rate it two and a half out of five. We agree that the film’s portrayal of a rogue artificial intelligence is the most compelling and timely element. We found the opening ape sequence protracted and unnecessary, and we criticized the extensive silence and lack of human dialogue. We acknowledge the film’s vast influence on later science fiction cinema despite our reservations about its pacing and coherence. Alec recounts a personal viewing anecdote in which he fell asleep and the steam moved to a different movie but awoke thinking he was still watching 2001, which illustrates Kubrick’s disorienting style. We recommend revisiting the HAL segments and the Jupiter sequence, as those portions best demonstrate the film’s enduring relevance.Visit Our Sponsor: https://dubby.gg10% Off Code: OURVERDICTSupport us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:[email protected] us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

We argue that Stanley Kubrick's The Killing is undermined by intrusive, frequently inaccurate narration. JJ found the narration distracting and it often contradicted the dialogue, which made the plot harder to follow. We note the film is short and follows a conventional heist structure that feels more like a studio picture than later Kubrick work. JJ disliked the black and white presentation and some clumsy dialogue, though we praised Marie Windsor as the strongest performer. Alec rated the film a three and saw it as an early demonstration of craft; JJ rated it one and a half and found it largely unengaging. We conclude that The Killing is an uneven, awkward film that will mainly interest Kubrick completists or viewers studying his development.Visit Our Sponsor: https://dubby.gg10% Off Code: OURVERDICTSupport us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:[email protected] us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

We argue that A Clockwork Orange forces the viewer to feel sympathy for a violent protagonist and then strips that sympathy away to examine human nature, free will, and rehabilitation. I find the film powerful but uneven because Stanley Kubrick’s visuals sometimes pull focus from the core themes. I also say that Malcolm McDowell carries the film and makes us feel both repulsion and pity. We discuss the film’s realistic dystopian hints and how those hints make us uncomfortable about the state of society. I recommend reading the book for more nuance, because it deepens the themes and makes the mirror the film holds up feel even closer. We conclude that the movie is a lasting conversation piece that makes you feel and think, even when it makes you feel gross.Visit Our Sponsor: https://dubby.gg10% Off Code: OURVERDICTSupport us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:[email protected] us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com
