Many of us fell in love with Natasha Rothwell through her role as the hilarious Kelli in HBO’s Insecure, and later sustained that love as she appeared as Belinda Lindsey in The White Lotus. Natasha is back on our screens, and this time, she’s starring in a show that she also created and executive-produced. It’s called How to Die Alone, and it’s currently streaming on Hulu. I’m thrilled that Natasha joins us this week to chat about some of the major themes of How to Die Alone including self-sabotage, loneliness, and feeling as if you’re behind in life. According to the World Health Organization, 8-13% of women are affected by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and it is also the leading cause of infertility for women. To explore more about this syndrome and its specific impact on Black women, I’m joined today by Sasha Ottey, a clinical and research microbiologist and the founder and executive director of PCOS Challenge: The National Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Association. After she was diagnosed with PCOS, Sasha founded PCOS Challenge and has since grown the organization to over 55,000 members. Her leadership focuses on advocating for research funding, innovation, and the development of safe and effective treatments for PCOS. During our conversation, we discuss why over 70% of women go undiagnosed for PCOS, the common symptoms and experiences of women with PCOS, and how to advocate for yourself to your medical team when fearing that you may have PCOS. Wait…Can you hear it? The constant political ads, the texts from campaigns you never signed up for, and relentless social media debates mean that election season is here in full force. Seriously though, this may be one of the most important election cycles of our time, and by our, I mean Gen Z.  Today, we’re diving into the real thoughts, hopes, and frustrations of college students as they navigate today’s political landscape. Joining me for this roundtable discussion are Alexandra Nelson, Gabrielle Cassell, and Jasmine Patrick. While the symptoms women experience during menopause and perimenopause can cause our sex lives to shift in some challenging ways, that doesn’t mean you still can’t embrace sexual vibrancy no matter the age. Athletes like Angel Reese & Sha’Carri Richardson have so brilliantly led women’s sports into the national spotlight, but with this has come lots of negative attention and straight-up negligent media coverage of these athletes and their sports. I wanted to hear from Black Women Sports journalists both in front of and behind the camera to explore what’s needed to correct some of these biased narratives. Joining me for this Black women in sports media roundtable are supervising producer Jasmine Ellis, and Emmy-award winning journalist Jemele Hill. Jasmine has worked on shows such as Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe's "A Touch More,” Speak.Easy for CNN+, and ESPNS’s SC6. And Jemele, making her return to the TBG Podcast, is a contributing writer for The Atlantic where she covers the intersection between sports, race, politics, gender and culture. Summer, is that you? After listening to Cowboy Carter far too much over this summer and hearing Beyoncé tell us to “look at that horse, look at that horse, look at that horse,” it was only right to then find out about equine-assisted psychotherapy, a form of therapy that incorporates a live horse in session with a client. To learn more about this unique type of therapy, I’m joined this week by 2nd year MSW candidate, Jasmine Morris. Jasmine works at Ebony Horsewomen Equestrian and Therapeutic Center in Hartford, Connecticut, where she serves as an Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy clinician. During our conversation we explore what a session of equine-assisted psychotherapy looks like, the potential benefits one could reap through this form of therapy, and how interacting with horses can help us build on our coping and emotional skills. Like many of you, I’ve spent the past couple of weeks glued to the tv watching the Paris Olympics and in constant awe of the talent and athleticism of the athletes. Gymnastics is always one of my favorite competitions to watch but this year I was also tuned in for the track and field events and basketball. There was just no shortage of excellence on display. And as often happens, feats of Black women being excellent are often met with racism and sexism. A few years ago, right after the Tokyo Olympics, we released a conversation with Dr. Leeja Carter, a feminist sport psychology practitioner and the CEO of Coalition for Food and Health Equity that feels just as timely today. During our conversation we discussed the ways that gendered racism shows up in sports, how the strong black woman trope impacts athletes, and how athletes are using platforms like social media to tell more of their story.
