Ghislaine Maxwell’s bail application was a contentious legal battle, as prosecutors argued she was a significant flight risk due to her wealth, multiple passports, and international connections. Initially, she was denied bail in July 2020, with the judge citing concerns that she had gone to great lengths to evade law enforcement before her arrest, including using an alias to buy a secluded New Hampshire property. Prosecutors further emphasized that she had access to millions of dollars and had demonstrated a pattern of deception, making her unlikely to return for trial if released. In response, Maxwell’s defense team countered that she was not a flight risk, claiming she had voluntarily remained in the U.S. and had no intention of fleeing. They proposed a bail package of $5 million secured by her and her family’s assets, as well as home confinement with electronic monitoring.

Despite these assurances, her subsequent bail applications, including a December 2020 attempt offering a $28.5 million bond backed by her family and husband, were also denied. The court remained unconvinced, arguing that Maxwell’s financial resources, foreign ties, and history of evasive behavior outweighed any conditions that could be imposed. The judge noted that her extraordinary wealth, including funds in undisclosed accounts, and her ability to live abroad indefinitely presented an unacceptable risk. Maxwell’s legal team continued to argue that her pretrial detention was overly harsh and unjust, but she remained incarcerated until her trial, where she was ultimately convicted on multiple charges related to Jeffrey Epstein’s trafficking network.
