On Monday Match Analysis, Gill Gross is joined by World Team Tennis CEO Stephen Amritraj to discuss its December 2026 return. In the mid to late 1970’s, players like Chris Evert, Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg were skipping Roland Garros to play World Team Tennis. It was a league that modeled itself around the major American sports leagues. There were teams, home cities and guaranteed salaries. In 2022, World Team Tennis announced it was cancelling the season. It was the first year without it since 1980. They teased a return in 2023 but the hiatus lasted longer than expected. Amritraj purchased the IP, hired a staff and is preparing to debut a new era of World Team Tennis this December. Eight top-20 players have signed on to play. I am fascinated by this endeavor - what have they changed to give WTT a better chance at sustainability, how they have been so successful recruiting top players, what is it like to find TV partners and venues?
