S4E14: Catching up with a friend - Imperfect vs Simple Past in Greek

In this episode we'll be looking at phrases and vocabulary you can use or see on an app, while booking a hotel room in Greece.D: Έλα τι κάνεις; Σε πήρα να κλείσουμε το ξενοδοχείο που λέγαμε για το τριήμερο στο βουνό. /Hey! How are you? I’m calling so we can book the hotel we were talking about for the long weekend in the mountains.E: Πάνω στην ώρα, αυτό κοιτούσα τώρα στην εφαρμογή. Οι ημερομηνίες 5-7 Φεβρουαρίου μας βολεύουν όλους έτσι; /Perfect timing! I was just checking it on the app. Are the dates February 5-7 convenient for everyone?D: Ναι./Yes.E: Ωραία. Κοίταξα σε ένα αλλά δεν είχε διαθεσιμότητα λόγω αυξημένης ζήτησης των ημερών. Τώρα βλέπω ένα άλλο που μου φαίνεται καλύτερο! Έχει και πρωινό μέσα στην τιμή. /Great. I checked one hotel, but it didn’t have availability because of high demand during those days. Now I’m looking at another one that seems even better! Breakfast is included in the price. D: Σούπερ. Κλείσε σε αυτό! Για εμάς βάλε ένα δίκλινο. /Awesome. Book that one! For us, put down one double room.E: Ωραία! Και για εμάς θα βάλω ένα τρίκλινο με ένα μονό και ένα διπλό κρεβάτι αλλά και μία κούνια. /Perfect! And for us, I’ll book a triple room with one single bed, one double bed, and a baby crib as well. D: Πολύ ωραία. Πρέπει να πληρώσουμε τώρα ή μπορούμε να κάνουμε την κράτηση και να πληρώσουμε εκεί./ Sounds great. Do we have to pay now, or can we make the reservation and pay there?E: Πρέπει να βάλουμε έστω μία προκαταβολή και μετά αν θέλουμε πληρώνουμε τα υπόλοιπα με κάρτα ή και με μετρητά εκεί. /We need to pay at least a deposit, and then if we want, we can pay the rest there by card or cash.D: Ίσως καλύτερα τα υπόλοιπα εκεί, μήπως χρειαστεί να το ακυρώσουμε. /Maybe it’s better to pay the rest there, in case we need to cancel.Ε: Καλά λες. Λοιπόν το δίκλινο με πρωινό είναι 70 ευρώ το βράδυ και το τρίκλινο είναι 80 ευρώ το βράδυ. /You’re right. So, the double room with breakfast is €70 per night, and the triple room is €80 per night.D: Η προκαταβολή πόσο είναι; /How much is the deposit?Ε: Είναι 150 ευρώ. /It’s €150.D: Μια χαρά! Μήπως έχει και βραδινό; /That’s fine! Does it also have dinner?Ε: Έχει αλλά είναι με επιπλέον χρέωση και από ό,τι βλέπω το πληρώνεις εκεί στο τέλος της διαμονής σου. /Yes, but it’s at an extra cost, and from what I see, you pay for it at the end of your stay.D: Ωραία, ας το έχουμε και αυτό στο μυαλό μας. /Okay, let’s keep that in mind.Ε: Πάρτε και κανένα μαγιό μαζί σας, από ό,τι βλέπω έχει και εσωτερική θερμαινόμενη πισίνα!!! /Bring your swimsuits too — apparently there’s a heated indoor pool!D: Ό,τι πρεπει με το κρύο! In this episode we'll be looking at the differences Imperfect and Simple Past have in Greek. We'll explain how and when we use them in everyday Greek conversations. Ε: Άντε πού είσαι; Σε έπαιρνα το σαββατοκύριακο αλλά δεν απαντούσες. /Hey, where have you been? I was calling you over the weekend but you weren’t answering.D: Ναι, συγγνώμη, ήμουν έξω όλη μέρα το Σάββατο. Το πρωί έτρεχα για δουλειές και μετά βρέθηκα με κάτι φίλους και τελικά γύρισα αργά το βράδυ. /Yeah, sorry, I was out all day on Saturday. In the morning I was running errands, then I met up with some friends, and I ended up getting back late at night.E: Α, γι’ αυτό. Πώς πέρασες; /Ah, that’s why. How was it?D: Τέλεια! Είχα καιρό να βγω και το ευχαριστήθηκα! Εσύ τι έκανες το Σαββατοκύριακο; / Great! I hadn’t gone out in a while and I really enjoyed it! What did you do over the weekend?E: Εγώ έκατσα σπίτι το Σάββατο, γιατί ήμουν πολύ κουρασμένη από όλη την εβδομάδα. Ε, το πρωί διάβασα λίγο, το μεσημέρι μαγείρεψα και μετά έβλεπα σειρές. Αλλά την Κυριακή το πρωί πρόλαβα και πήγα για έναν καφέ πριν βρέξει. /I stayed home on Saturday because I was very tired from the whole week. In the morning I read a bit, at noon I cooked, and then I watched series. But on Sunday morning I managed to go out for a coffee before it rained.D: Μα χαρά! Κι εγώ αρχικά σκεφτόμουν να μείνω μέσα, αλλά άλλαξα γνώμη. /Nice! I was initially thinking of staying in too, but I changed my mind. E: Καλά έκανες! Την Κυριακή πήγες πουθενά; /You did well! Did you go anywhere on Sunday?D: Όχι, επειδή έβρεχε αλλά ήθελα να χαλαρώσω κιόλας  λίγο πριν αρχίσει η εβδομάδα. / No, because it was raining, and I also wanted to relax a bit before the week started.E: Σωστά. Δούλευες σήμερα; /Right. Were you working today?D: Ναι, δούλευα το πρωί και γύρισα πριν λίγο σπίτι./Yes, I was working in the morning and got home a little while ago.E: Ωραία, γιατί σκεφτόμουν να βρισκόμασταν αφού δεν ειδωθήκαμε μέσα στο ΣΚ. /Great, because I was thinking we could meet since we didn’t see each other over the weekend.D: Καλή ιδέα! Έναν απογευματινό καφέ θα τον ήθελα! /Good idea! I’d love an afternoon coffee!E: Τέλεια,  θα περάσω να σε πάρω στις 6. Είναι καλά; /Perfect, I’ll come by to pick you up at 6. In this episode we're taking everyday professions and breaking the Greek words apart to see where they come from and what they literally mean. Because in Greek, words aren’t random.They’re built with intention, logic, and history.Nurse = νοσοκόμα. The Greek word νοσοκόμα comes from two parts: νόσος = disease, illness and κομέω / κομώ = to take care of, to tend. So νοσοκόμα literally means:👉 “the person who takes care of illness.” The word itself emphasizes care, not just medical tasks. Ophthalmologist = οφθαλμίατρος. This word becomes very clear once you break it down: οφθαλμός = eye and ιατρός = doctor. So οφθαλμίατρος literally means:👉 “doctor of the eye.” That’s why so many medical terms around the world are built directly from Greek roots.Gynecologist = γυναικολόγος. Let’s break this one apart: γυνή / γυναίκα = woman and λόγος = study, science, discourse. So γυναικολόγος means:👉 “someone who studies and specializes in the woman’s body.” Here, λόγος doesn’t just mean “word.” It means systematic study.Dentist = οδοντίατρος. οδούς / οδόντος = tooth and ιατρός = doctor. And οδοντίατρος is literally:👉 “the doctor of the teeth.”. That’s also why we have words like ορθοδοντική and οδοντολογία.Psychologist = ψυχολόγος. One of the most meaningful examples: ψυχή = soul, mind, inner life and λόγος = studySo ψυχολόγος literally means:👉 “someone who studies the soul.” The Greek word reaches beyond “mental health” and into the inner world of a person.What I love about Greek is that the words explain themselves once you know how to break them down. In this episode you'll hear us planning our New Year's Eve. We'll give you some related vocabulary and talk about various customs and traditions we have in Greece on that day.E: Τι λες να κάνουμε φέτος για Πρωτοχρονιά; /What do you think we should do this year for New Year’s Eve?D: Σκεφτόμουν να μαζευόμασταν όπως κάθε χρόνο σε κάποιο σπίτι και να κάναμε μαζί αλλαγή χρονιάς. Είχες κάτι άλλο στο μυαλό σου; /I was thinking we could get together like every year at someone’s place and welcome the New Year together. Did you have something else in mind?E: Αυτό σκεφτόμουν κι εγώ αλλά έλεγα μήπως θέλατε να βγαίναμε κιόλας μετά την αλλαγή. /That’s what I was thinking too, but I wondered whether you might want to go out after the New Year comes in.D: Λες; Πού να πάμε όμως; Θα έχει πάρα πολύ κόσμο έξω. Α σε που δεν θα βρίσκουμε να κάτσουμε κάπου, θα έπρεπε να έχουμε ήδη κλείσει κάποιο τραπέζι. /You think so? But where would we go? It’ll be incredibly crowded outside. Plus, we won’t be able to find anywhere to sit, and we’d have needed to book a table already.E: Έχεις δίκιο. Ας κάτσουμε σπίτι. Μπορούμε να βγούμε το μεσημέρι της παραμονής που θα έχει διάφορα πάρτυ στο κέντρο. /You’re right. Let’s stay home. We can go out during the day on New Year’s Eve—there are various parties downtown then.D: Καλή ιδέα αυτή. Άρα να έχουμε ετοιμάσει από πριν τα φαγητά όμως./That’s a good idea. So we should have the food prepared beforehand, though.E: Εννοείται. Έτσι κι αλλιώς τα παιδιά μάλλον θα βγουν και την Πρωτοχρονιά για κάλαντα, οπότε μπορούμε μετά να βγούμε και να γυρίσουμε νωρίς το απόγευμα. Να έχουμε χρόνο να ετοιμαστούμε. /Of course. Besides, the kids will probably go out on New Year’s Day to sing carols, so afterward we can go out too and be back early in the afternoon. That way we’ll have time to get ready.D: Ωραία! Θα κάνεις πάλι το τέλειο μοσχαράκι σου; /Great! Will you make your perfect veal stew again?E: Φυσικά! Λέω φέτος να το κάνω με ρύζι, για αλλαγή. /Of course! This year I’m thinking of making it with rice, for a change.D: Τέλεια! Αναλαμβάνω την βασιλόπιτα και καμία σαλάτα. /Perfect! I’ll take care of the vasilopita and a couple of salads.Ε: Την σαμπάνια να μην ξεχάσουμε να έχουμε έτοιμη στην αντίστροφη μέτρηση! /Let’s not forget to have the champagne ready for the countdown!D: Τι δώρο λες να βάλουμε για το φλουρί; /What kind of gift do you think we should put for the lucky coin?E: Κανένα γούρι με ρόδι, για το καλό! /Some kind of good-luck charm with a pomegranate, for good fortune!D: Ωραία, ωραία, θα πάω να πάρω αύριο. Ψωνίσατε όλα σας τα δώρα για την ανταλλαγή; /Nice, nice—I’ll go buy it tomorrow. Have you bought all your gifts for the exchange?E: Σχεδόν! Μας μένουν δύο, έχουμε βρει τι θα πάρουμε αλλά δεν είχαμε χρόνο ακόμα. Μέσα στη βδομάδα θα πάμε όμως γιατί θα έρθει και ο Άι Βασίλης και πρέπει να είμαστε έτοιμοι και γι’αυτό! /Almost! We still have two left—we know what we’re getting, but we haven’t had time yet. We’ll go during the week, though, because Santa will be coming too and we need to be ready for that!D: Σωστά, σωστά! Σε εσάς έρχεται ακόμα ο Άγιος Βασίλης. /Right, right! Santa still comes to your place.E: Ακριβώς! Λοιπόν, σε αφήνω να ετοιμάσω τη λίστα για το σούπερ μάρκετ! Θα τα πούμε αύριο!/ Exactly! In this Christmas themed episode, we'll talk about how we usually spend Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the next one. We will also give you some related vocabulary so you can wish your friends and family Merry Christmas in Greek.D: Λοιπόν για να ανακεφαλαιώσουμε το πρόγραμμά μας για τα Χριστούγεννα! /So, let’s recap our Christmas schedule!E: Ωραία, την παραμονή τα παιδιά μας θα πάνε μαζί για κάλαντα, οπότε αφού τελειώσουν μπορούμε να πάμε για έναν καφέ και ό,τι τελευταία ψώνια μάς έχουν μείνει. /Great. On Christmas Eve the kids will go caroling together, so once they’re done we can go for a coffee and do any last-minute shopping we still have.D: Τέλεια αν και θα γίνεται χαμός στα μαγαζιά, αλλά όλο και κάτι μπορεί να έχουμε ξεχάσει. /Perfect, although the shops will be packed, surely there’s something we’ve forgotten.E: Ε ναι. Ανήμερα, θα τα περάσουμε οικογενειακά, οπότε δεν έχουμε κάτι να κάνουμε για εκείνη τη μέρα. /Of course. On Christmas Day we’ll spend it with family, so we don’t have anything to plan for that day.D: Αχ ναι, ευτυχώς το έχουν αναλάβει οι γονείς μου εκείνο το τραπέζι. Για τη δεύτερη μέρα, που θα μαζευτούμε στο σπίτι μου λέω να κάνω χοιρινό λεμονάτο με πατάτες στο φούρνο για κυρίως. /Oh yes, thankfully my parents are taking care of that meal. Για ορεκτικά σκεφτόμουν τυροπιτάκια ή σπανακοπιτάκια ή και τα δύο. /Couldn’t be better! I was thinking of trying to make diples this year. I’ve never made them before. What do you think?D: Τολμηρή σε βρίσκω! Αλλά η αλήθεια είναι ότι μου αρέσουν πάρα πολύ, οπότε θα περιμένω να τις δοκιμάσω και από τα χεράκια σου! / I find you brave! But the truth is I really love them, so I’ll be looking forward to tasting the ones made by your own hands!Ε: Τέλεια! Έτοιμες λοιπόν. /Perfect! Then we’re all set.D: Ώπα! Περίμενε! Τι θα πιούμε; /Wait! Hold on! What will we drink?Ε: Ααα σωστά! Ε λευκό κρασί ταιριάζει με το χοιρινό. /Ahhh, right! Well, white wine goes well with pork.D: Ωραία. Λευκό κρασάκι οπότε και κανένα χυμό ή αναψυκτικό για τα παιδιά. /Great. So white wine, and maybe some juice or soft drinks for the kids.Ε: Τι ωραία! Ανυπομονώ! /How wonderful! In this episode we will talk about holiday related vocabulary and the roots of these words. We will help you understand where they come from and how they got the meaning they have now."So first we’ll look at the word Χριστούγεννα = Christmas, which is derived from the words Χριστός = Christ και γέννα (γέννηση) = birth, meaning η γέννηση του Χριστού = the birth of Christ. Then we have Πρωτοχρονιά = New Year’s Day, which is also a compound word and is derived from the words πρώτος = first και χρονιά = year, meaning Η πρώτη μέρα του χρόνου = the first day of the year. And the third holiday we celebrate in Greece during this season is "Θεοφάνεια" = Epiphany, which is formed by the words Θεός = God και φαίνομαι = to appear. Θεοφάνεια is the day that commemorates the manifestation of the Holy Trinity during the baptism of Jesus. The English word Epiphany is also of Greek origin, coming from επιφάνεια which means ‘appearance’ or ‘manifestation’. So these were the three big holidays we include in what we call εορταστική περίοδος = festive season. Now looking into some other words, we have of course "μελομακάρονα" which doesn’t have a translation in English, but they’re the honey dipped cookies, and the word comes from μέλι = honey και μακαρία = a small offering bread. And then we have some words that are not compound, like:στολίδι = ornament, decoration from the verb στολίζω = to decorate δώρο = the present from the verb δίνω = to give, which actually in Greek δώρο is an object or gesture offered without expecting anything in return.έθιμο = tradition/ custom, comes from the ancient έθος = habit and is a customary practice of a people or a group.άγγελος = angel. And yes, the English word ‘angel’ comes from the ancient Greek άγγελος, which means αγγελιαφόρος = the messenger giving the meaning messenger of God and entered English through Latin."

They will talk about how the weather is in Greece and show you ways to tell the weather in Greek.E: Πωπω, χειμώνιασε κιόλας!!/Wow, it’s already winter!D: Η αλήθεια είναι πως άλλαξε απότομα ο καιρός… Μόλις μπήκε ο Δεκέμβριος κρύωσε αρκετά./True, the weather changed so suddenly… As soon as December started, it got much colder.E: Ακριβώς! Η θερμοκρασία έχει πέσει αισθητά. Στην Θεσσαλονίκη οι θερμοκρασίες μας κυμαίνονται μεταξύ 10 και 15 περίπου βαθμών Κελσίου./Exactly! The temperature has dropped noticeably. Here in Thessaloniki it’s around 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.D: Και στην Αθήνα έτσι είναι πάνω κάτω. Ίσως τη μέρα να κάνει λίγη περισσότερη ζέστη γιατί είμαστε πιο νότια, αλλά σε γενικές γραμμές κάνει κρύο. Λένε ότι από βδομάδα θα πέσεις κι άλλο η θερμοκρασία./It’s more or less the same in Athens. Maybe during the day it’s a bit warmer because we’re further south, but generally it’s cold. They say that next week the temperature will drop even more.E: Σίγουρα! Εδώ στα βόρεια έχει λίγες μέρες που έχουμε και πολλή ομίχλη. Άσε που η υγρασία τρυπάει κόκκαλο όπως πάντα. Και μιας που μιλάμε για κρύα, μόλις θυμήθηκα ότι πρέπει να πάρω καινούρια μπουφάν στα παιδιά. Τα περσινά δεν τους κάνουν!/For sure! Up here in the north we’ve had a lot of fog these last few days. And the humidity gets right into your bones, as always. And speaking of the cold, I just remembered I need to buy new jackets for the kids. Last year’s don’t fit them anymore!D: Ωχ! Έχεις δίκιο. Εμένα λογικά θα χρειαστούν και σκουφιά και γάντια, κάπου χάθηκαν τα παλιά./Oh! You’re right. Mine will probably need hats and gloves too; the old ones are lost somewhere.E: Σωστά! /True!D: Νομίζω βέβαια, θα χρειαστεί να πάμε για ψώνια σύντομα, γιατί σχεδόν κανένα από τα περσινά χειμερινά ρούχα δεν τους κάνει, τώρα που το σκέφτομαι./ I think we’ll need to go shopping soon anyway, because now that I think about it, almost none of last year’s winter clothes fit them.E: Κι εμείς μία από τα ίδια. Ίσως η μικρή να μπορέσει να πάρει κάποια ρούχα από τη μεγάλη, αλλά σίγουρα έχουμε κι εμείς τα ψώνια στο πρόγραμμα./Same here. Maybe the little one can wear some clothes from the older one, but we definitely have shopping on our list too.D: Λοιπόν θα σου πω τι έχω στη λίστα και πες μου αν ξεχνάω κάτι./So, I’ll tell you what I have on my list and you tell me if I’m forgetting anything.Ε: Πες μου./Go ahead.D: Ωραία, έχω γράψει: παντελόνια, μακρυμάνικες μπλούζες, φούτερ, πουλόβερ, κασκόλ και κανένα μπουφάν./Okay, I’ve written down: pants, long-sleeved shirts, hoodies, sweaters, scarves, and a jacket or two.E: Και τα γάντια με τα σκουφάκια που είπες πριν!/And the gloves and hats you mentioned earlier!D: Σωστά, σωστά! Κάτσε να τα γράψω. Οπότε είμαι έτοιμη, τώρα μένει μόνο να πάμε στα μαγαζιά!/Right, right! Let me write those down.
