I know it seems like I've been putting this off for a while now but this is actually a film I have quite fond memories of. This was a movie that released just before my birthday and me my mates all went to the Odeon in Newcastle and had a blast. The film messed up towards the last half hour and they had to restart it from the mid point of the movie. It was a weird experience as retreading a lot of the movie we'd just watched made it feel more predictable and so when we got that twist it was even more shocking. Thats always the first thing I think of when I think of this movie and even now I feel like its the franchises biggest gut punch. Killing John Connor in Dark Fate was but...for a different reason. Either way from what I remember of the film this was basically a remake of Terminator 2. Going back through it though I found a lot of things to like and it's probably my fourth favourite film in the franchise. We are gonna be breaking it all down but first I wanna quickly shoutouts #JusticeForCharlie from friend of the channel Trevor Weller. That's the t-shirt I'm wearing for today's video and Trevor is trying to raise awareness for the medical malpractice of his father. Now in the wake of Terminator 2 Cameron had stated he wasn't interested in doing a sequel and he believed that 1 and 2 acted like a perfect self contained story. Part 1 was about parents with this being seen in the three main characters. Sarah was the Mother and Kyle was the Father but The Terminator was also a father as well. Released in 1997 this sees the final appearance of Ellen Ripley. Well...kind of. As I'm sure you know she died at the end of Alien 3 with this version being a clone. Coming just five years after that movie, I remember as I kid it feeling like there was a massive delay. Alien 3 had been a nightmare to get off the ground and there were countless drafts and directions they wanted to go. If you've checked out our breakdown on that then you know the story. If you don't basically it was gonna centre around Hicks with Ripley appearing in a cameo role. Things were obviously changed but her death in part 3 meant that they had to go in a new direction. Or so they thought. Hiring Joss Whedon to write the films script they'd initially been impressed with his work on Buffy. That had a young strong female character which is the direction they wanted for the series. Initially they wanted to clone Newt and have her be the films protagonist. Alien 3 released before Jurassic Park and you can really see how that movie changed the industry. Genetics, cloning and CGI had all been things that were talking points of that movie. Just in the same way the dinosaurs chased people round the park Fox wanted Aliens to chase people round a ship. This was a big thing at the time with Deep Blue Sea doing something similar just 2 years later. Newt was originally in the Ripley Role and was they were gonna have the climax on Earth. Like whenever you talk about the movie I think that you're obviously gonna get a lot of mixed feelings. Out of the entire trilogy this was the one I was most curious to come back to because it really hasn't got a good reputation. Even though it was nominated for best picture everyone agrees that this was the worst. Whether its Sofia Coppolas performance, pay disputes behind the scenes or just the general...almost tv feel to it, everything was lambasted at the time. Now whenever Ive gone back to it I've always thought...eh...not so bad. Unfortunately though this is a sequel to two of the greatest films ever made so no matter what things were always gonna come up short. Coppola stated that he wanted to make an epilogue which would tell the aftermath of Michaels story. Those first two films handled it perfectly and thus many felt this was an unnecessary sequel. However since its release I do think that the movies gained a fanbase. Coppola also recently re-edited the film and that's a major aspect of things I wanna talk about. Lucas had been a big fan of the Flash Gordon serials and he'd been planning to adapt them in some way into his own work in films. Apparently at 1971 Cannes Film Festival when he was showing THX he started putting feelers out to see if he could buy the rights for Flash Gordon. However, they were owned by Dino De Laurentis and thus Lucas decided to do his own space opera. The movie is a road trip on steroids with lots of hidden details and things you might have missed. That takes us to the year before I was born which, showing my age here 1987. George Miller wanted to create a movie that was one none stop chase but it took 11 years to storyboard the concept. In 1998 they started drawing comic panels with him working with five artists. Over the space of a year they made 3500 images with this storyboard unit being viewable online...or like...right in the video on screen now. Possessing very little dialogue this would be an action driven movie in which you could know the story without knowing English. Let’s go! Matt Reeves’ second Planet of the Apes film War For the Planet of the Apes released on July 14th 2017 and raked in a crazy $490.7 million on a budget of around $152 million dollars. Returning from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes along with Matt Reeves are Andy Serkis as Caesar, Terry Notary as Caesar’s best friend Rocket, Judy Greer as Caesar’s wife Cornelia, Karin Konoval as the Bornean Organgutan Maurice, Caesar’s wise and kind advisor and Toby Kebell as the Ghost of Koba’s Past. But anyways, the movie opens with a recap of the world events from this Planet of the Apes trilogy by highlighting the words Rise, Dawn and War...to, of course, point to the past rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes movies and this current War for the Planet of the Apes film.
