Fangirls Going Rogue: Star Wars Conversation from a Female POV

On May 4, a new Star Wars animated show, Tales of the Underworld, will debut on Disney+. Fangirls Going Rogue had a chance to sit down with voice actress Nika Futterman, who portrays Asajj Ventress. Joining us on this roundtable were Sarah and Richard Woloski on behalf of Skywalking Through Neverland, George from Star Wars Holocron, Bryan Young from Full of Sith, Alex Damon from Star Wars Expalain, Charlotte Errity from Skytalkers, and William Devereux from Ion Cannon podcast. From Disney: From creator Dave Filoni comes “Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld,” an all-new anthology series of animated shorts which will premiere May 4, 2025, exclusively on Disney+. The popular series, which began in 2022 with “Tales of the Jedi” and continued in 2024 with “Tales of the Empire,” this time focuses on the criminal underbelly of the Star Wars galaxy through the experiences of two iconic villains. Former assassin and bounty hunter Asajj Ventress is given a new chance at life and must go on the run with an unexpected new ally, while outlaw Cad Bane faces his past when he confronts an old friend, now a Marshal on the opposite side of the law. Produced by Lucasfilm Animation, “Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld” is executive produced by Dave Filoni, Athena Yvette Portillo, and Carrie Beck. Fangirls Going Rogue kicks off the New Year discussing the theme of friendship in storytelling, highlighting this concept as it plays out in Skeleton Crew and Wicked. Hosts Tricia Barr and Sarah Woloski were initially drawn to the character KB in Skeleton Crew. As her friendship is tested with Fern in Episodes 4 - 7, KB gains confidence and new friends in Wim and Neel, while also helping Fern evolve as the crew's leader. In the popular movie Wicked, Galinda and Elphaba find their loathing turn to friendship, and changes both women for the better. Disney+’s Agatha All Along has ended. In honor of this amazing show, we’ve convened a Coven of Chaos to discuss the show’s impact. After introducing our guests Bryn MacKinnon and Debra Lang, hosts Sarah Woloski and Tricia Barr kick off the show with our impressions of the Skeleton Crew‘s trailer. No one seemed to mind the Huttesse version of “Major Tom.” Skeleton Crew premieres with two episodes on Disney+ December 3. Once the coven determined which witch they were should we ever travel the Witches’ Road, we shared our favorite episodes from Agatha All Along and discussed the titular character’s journey as a Mother on her way to becoming a Crone. Everyone agreed that there was magick in the creation of the show, from the passion for the costume design to the intricate weaving of the script and direction. Showrunner Jac Schaefer’s interview with THR offered great insight into the storytelling process where reveals are nested one inside the other. Sarah dove into the craft in making the Ballad of the Witches’ Road, dovetailing off our discussion in our previous episode focusing on Lorna Wu’s version as compared to the version featured in Episode 2 “Circle Sewn With Fate/Unlock Thy Hidden Gate.” Our Zoom chats will reconvene once Skeleton Crew premieres so check back here for dates and times.
