Building Excellence in Cardio-Oncology: The Story Behind IC-OS Certification

IC-OS has offered a certification in Cardio-Oncology Knowledge for six years. Nearly 250 individuals from around the world have been certified. In this episode we explore the development and beenfits of IC-OS certification with two of the leaders of this project. Upon first clinical presentation it looked certain that Jackie Ellis was suffering from ICI myocarditis, a rare but deadly condition. Upon further evaluation Dr. Joshua Mitchell determined this was not in fact the case. This allowed her oncology team to continue her on the life saving cancer therapy she needed. This is cardio-oncology care at its best. The goal is to mitigate cardiovascular complications in order to keep treating the cancer!

The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and IC-OS jointly published a paper titled: “Prevention and management of cardiovascular disease in adults with cancer: an International Cardio-Oncology Society (IC-OS) and Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) clinical practice statement”. This is a critical contribution to the literature because it was produced by and for the hematology/oncology community. Historically, cardio-oncology has been dominated by cardiologists. We are seeking to address this by working closely with the hematology/oncology community on various projects including publications.
