Neal Sugarman is the tenor saxophone player in the Dap-Kings band and a co-owner of Daptone Records with Gabriel Roth founded in 2001. Neal also has a Soul jazz project called The Sugarman 3, a band that predates SJDK and was a major impetus for Neal and Gabe Roth (Bosco Mann) to start Daptone Records together. Dap-Dippin’ and The Sugarman 3’s Pure Cane Sugar were the label’s first and second LP releases and they were shipped from Neal’s kitchen table. Most aspiring professional musicians dream of their music being signed by a great record label. But what is a label? How does it work?
