In this episode, Paul changes lattitudes with you once more! He recently returned from his travels in the southern part of Africa, experiencing unfamiliar skies and stars. Constellations with strange names and views out of our own galaxy to our closest galactic neighbours, which only grace nightskies in the deep south of the Earth. This change of perspective grants new awe for the Universe and its beauty. Woher wissen wir eigentlich so genau, aus was Sterne und Nebel, Supernova-Überreste und Staubwolken bestehen, die teilweise hunderte, wenn nicht sogar Millionen, Lichtjahre weit entfernt sind? Denn Licht, sichtbares Licht, um genau zu sein, ist nichts weiter als ein Teil der elektromagnetischen Strahlung, die praktisch alle kosmische Objekte entweder selbst aussenden oder reflektieren. Humanity has many homes. Earth. The solar system. But just as well: the Milky Way. It's our very own galaxy, an island of stars within the vast emptiness of space. The sun is only one of 100 billion stars within the Milky Way.  We now know, that in reality, if you could look at it from far away, you'd understand that the Milky Way is a beautiful spiral galaxy. But we can only look from within. And from the vantagepoint of Earth, the Milky Way is a mighty band of stars, that stretches across our night sky, if it's dark enough. We look into one of the spiral arms and what lies beyond.
