Allen Sussman was a board-certified endocrinologist in private practice for 34 years and clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington. As cofounder and president of Rainier Clinical Research Center, Dr. Sussman was involved in hundreds of evidence-based studies and the development of ground-breaking technology for the treatment of diabetes. Dr. Sussman is the author of Saving the Art of Medicine, which shares his evolution as a physician—what he calls his “progression from bookish to mindful to heartfelt.” He insists physicians are becoming too focused on clinical studies and pharmaceuticals and forgetting how to practice humility, collaborate with patients, listen with compassion, and heed inner wisdom. Dr. Sussman has learned from experience that connecting with patients is as integral to healing as science.
