Nancy Crampton Brophy is an American romance novelist from Portland, Oregon, who became the center of a murder investigation after her husband, 63-year-old chef and culinary instructor Daniel Brophy, was found shot to death at the Oregon Culinary Institute on June 2, 2018. Daniel had been shot twice while preparing for classes, and investigators eventually determined that his wife was responsible for the killing. Prosecutors argued that the murder was financially motivated, pointing to the couple's money problems and approximately $1.4 million in life insurance benefits that Nancy stood to collect following her husband's death. Surveillance cameras captured her minivan traveling near the culinary school around the time of the murder, contradicting her initial claim that she had been home that morning. Investigators also discovered that she had purchased a Glock 9mm handgun and obtained components for a second firearm, leading prosecutors to argue that she had replaced the gun's barrel to prevent investigators from matching ballistic evidence to her weapon. Nancy was arrested on September 5, 2018, and charged with murdering her husband, setting the stage for a criminal prosecution built largely on circumstantial evidence.

The case attracted national attention after investigators discovered that Crampton Brophy had previously written an online essay titled How to Murder Your Husband, in which she discussed fictional scenarios involving women killing their spouses and the difficulties of getting away with murder. Although the essay became one of the most widely publicized aspects of the case, the trial judge excluded it from evidence because of its potential to unfairly prejudice the jury. During her 2022 trial, prosecutors presented financial records, surveillance footage, firearm purchases and testimony establishing that Nancy had both the opportunity and an alleged financial motive to kill Daniel. The defense maintained that the couple had a loving relationship, disputed the prosecution's financial theory and argued that the evidence failed to establish her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Nancy testified in her own defense, denying that she had murdered her husband and explaining that her interest in firearms was connected to research for her writing. On May 25, 2022, following a seven-week trial, a jury convicted her of second-degree murder with a firearm. She was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 25 years, bringing an end to a case in which a novelist known for writing about fictional crimes was convicted of carrying out the murder of her own husband.
