Finding his start in the segregated city and musical streets of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Stubblefield became the underappreciated source of the funk rhythm that powered the legendary success of James Brown. After six years of playing with the Godfather of Soul, however, Stubblefield had had enough. In 1970, Stubblefield settled down in Madison, Wisconsin, where he could be found playing funk, jazz, R&B, blues, rock and roll, Tex-Mex, and country music for almost anyone who asked. There he found a welcoming and appreciative community of musicians and admirers for the final forty-six years of his life. It was in Madison where Steinberg first met Clyde, befriended him, and asked to write the story of how Stubblefield became the most sampled drummer of all time and how the rhythms of the funky drummer emerged as the foundational sound of hip-hop—despite minimal recognition and compensation.   We'll discuss.   Peace. j.   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   READ THE WEEKLY TIR NEWSLETTER HERE: https://www.patreon.com/collection/1853497   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. Get August's book here, directly from Monthly Review: https://monthlyreview.org/in-the-public-eye-black.../   Over the last decade, Cedric Robinson’s Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition has deeply shaped debates on the place of race within capitalist societies. Perhaps these questions are now settled, but at one time they were far too controversial:   Is race subsumed by class, with the latter the sine qua non of capitalism?   Do race and class act independently within modern societies?   Or does capitalism inevitably express a deeper racial impetus in the West?   August Nimtz defends Marxism from Robinson’s accusations of myopia on matters of race, suggesting that, in charging Marx and Engels with Eurocentrism, he either failed to understand, or misrepresented, their work—and that, in effect, many thinkers inspired by Black Marxism blatantly misrepresented Marxist texts   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   READ THE WEEKLY TIR NEWSLETTER HERE: https://www.patreon.com/collection/1853497   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. Get Shawn's book here: https://www.amazon.com/American-Socialist.../dp/1668056739   Before Bernie Sanders, before Zohran Mamdani, America’s favorite socialist was Eugene Debs. In 1912, some 1,200 Socialists held elected office across the United States. Wisconsin had a Socialist congressman in Washington, and ministers in Oklahoma preached the gospel of “Christian socialism” at revival-style gatherings come summertime. The leader of this vibrant movement? One Eugene V. Debs—part working-class agitator, part radical prophet, a man who made it feel like being an American and a socialist was the most natural thing in the world. Get Susanne's book here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/.../the-devils-castle.../   In The Devil’s Castle, Susanne Paola Antonetta weaves a haunting narrative that confronts the darkest chapters of psychiatric history while offering a bold vision for the future of mental health care. In 1939, the eugenics movement growing throughout the West did its worst in Nazi Germany. Through the Aktion T4 euthanasia program, five asylums and an abandoned jail were transformed into gas chambers. Tens of thousands of lives—predominantly adults with neuropsychiatric conditions—were extinguished in those structures, ultimately paving the way for the horrors of the Holocaust.
