esports has been around since1978 when Atari laid the foundation with a Space Invaders tournament.  The early gaming classic was played at the 1980 Space Invaders Championships with over 10,000 gamers competing. Mary Iannelli sits down with Emmy award winner, Willow Forde to discuss this old, but new, art form, how they became involved with it and what they think the future holds.

Digital Emmy Awards:  The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced [Dec 9, 2019] a new Sports Emmy category, Outstanding Esports Coverage. The award will “recognize the craft behind the delivery of coverage and presentation of competitive, organized video gaming to the viewer during a championship or final event.”

The awards committee for the Academy made the unanimous decision to recognize esports journalism in an effort to “expand the Emmy universe,” said Justine Gubar, executive director of Sports Emmy Awards Administration, and herself a four-time Emmy Award winner.

Battle Royale traditionally refers to a fight involving many combatants, usually conducted under either boxing or wrestling rules, where the winner is the one who registers the most kills. In recent times, the term has been used in a more general sense to refer to any fight involving large numbers of people who are not organized into factions. Within combat sports and professional wrestling, the term has a specific meaning, depending on the sports being discussed.

Castors  is another name for a commentator, who will speak over the action to engage, inform and entertain the viewer. Casters will need good knowledge of the game and teams they are casting, to offer personality and bring a match to life.

Gaming Map is just a representation of the game world or a part of it. All video games have a map of the playing area. Sometimes only the developers can see that and the player just has to discover the section/level/world on their own, such as Doom. In others, the map is drawn as you explore

esports winter/esports bubble:  It’s a term that’s being used to describe the current state of the industry in which esports teams are struggling financially to stay afloat.
