Ep #207: Am I Ready for Yoga Teacher Training? with Byron & Kimberley
Am I ready for yoga teacher training? It's the question almost every would-be trainee asks — and in this three-way roundtable, Michael Henri, Byron de Marsé, and Kimberley Utama trace their own winding paths from "definitely not ready" to 26+ combined years of leading trainings.
Kimberley burst into tears in Shavasana at her very first class in Australia — "a coming home to myself" — then spent six years teaching before she could call herself a teacher. Byron, a shy kid from Oklahoma, walked into a Santa Monica power yoga class at 23 with no idea what was coming, practiced daily at a donation studio, and ended up on a reality show where yoga stopped being a hobby and became survival. Michael tore his ACL three weeks before his own training — and did it anyway.
Together they unpack the "I'm not ready" myth (not flexible enough, not fit enough, not spiritual enough), why most people who take a teacher training never teach — and why it's still worth doing, the child's pose trick for nervous new teachers, and what actually makes the training container transformative: reduced stimulation, real community, and being seen, heard, and held. As Kimberley puts it: there's life before teacher training, and life after.
All three teach together on The IN Movement's 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training this November in Ubud, Bali:
