Paul Yoon's "Etna" is a novel told in first dog/first person narrative form. They are all survivors making a life in a post-war-apocalyptic age.  Could "Etna" be the dog story of our time, one that goes beyond animal rights, and addresses animal voice?  And his guide as he wrote it was always his 12-year-old dog Oscar. After a PETA investigation found 10,000 parakeets in one inhumane shed at Creekside Birds in Oklahoma, comes this realization. Dr. John P. Gluck was honored with PETA's Trailblazing Advocacy Award in 2021 for being a shining example of ethics in science. The one-time animal experimenter, who studied with the infamous Harry Harlow, describes his own transformation from animal experimenter to a compassionate bioethicist committed to a cruelty-free science. In conversation with Emil Guillermo, Gluck talks about his childhood, his studies in college, and his professional life. He recalls when he began to see animals as patients, not tools of science.
