The Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartels, has increasingly extended its footprint into Guatemala, particularly along the border regions with Mexico. According to analysts, CJNG’s expansion strategy in Guatemala has been relatively subtle compared to its aggressive operations in Mexico — in places like the department of Huehuetenango, for example, it has built alliances with local criminal groups, used the Transversal Norte corridor to move drugs and personnel, and avoided high-profile violence so as not to draw excessive attention from Guatemalan authorities.

At the same time, the Guatemalan government has raised alarms over CJNG-linked activities, noting how the cartel exploits weak border controls, under-resourced law enforcement, and the mountainous terrain to traffic cocaine, methamphetamine, and precursor chemicals from South America northward. Guatemalan and Mexican security forces have responded by deploying thousands of troops in border departments such as San Marcos, Huehuetenango and Petén in an operation dubbed “Ring of Fire” to curb incursions of groups like the CJNG and the Sinaloa Cartel.
