Today we're talking about values. And before you roll your eyes thinking this is going to be another fluffy conversation about mission statements and posters in the break room, it's not.This is about something much more real: What you actually stand for when standing for it costs you something.Because here's the truth I've learned across decades on rugby fields and in boardrooms: you can tell me your values all day long, but I'll know what they really are by watching what you do when things go sideways.

They wait for things to "settle down" before they adjust.But things don't settle down. The pace of change is accelerating.The captains who succeed in moments of change do three things:1. They acknowledge reality fast.No pretending. No wishing things were different. They look at what is, not what they wish was. And they communicate that reality clearly.2. They identify what still works.Change doesn't erase everything. Some strengths are still strengths. Great captains don't throw out the playbook—they identify what to keep and what to change.3. They move quickly and communicate clearly.Indecision kills momentum. Unclear communication creates chaos. The best captains make the call, explain the new approach, and get everyone aligned fast.Not perfect. Just clear and quick.When change lands on your desk this week, ask three questions:What's actually true right now?What strengths can we still leverage?What's the clearest path forward from here?Leadership through change isn't about having all the answers.It's about providing clarity when everything feels uncertain.

The reason you keep going when obstacles hit.And like Vision, you need Mission on two levels:Your organization's mission: Why does this work matter? Who's better off because of what we do?Your career mission: Why do YOU work so hard? What difference are you making through your career?When both are clear and aligned, you have something powerful: Purpose that sustains you.But when mission is missing or misaligned? Work becomes transactional. It's just a paycheck. Just execution.
