The arrest of Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) leader and former Dharapuram by-election candidate M. Karthika has triggered a political controversy in Tamil Nadu. Karthika and her husband were arrested in Coimbatore on October 20 in connection with cases registered during the Dharapuram by-election campaign. The cases relate to an alleged road blockade, surrounding a police station and campaigning along a route scheduled for Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s roadshow. Police action has drawn sharp criticism from NTK chief coordinator Seeman and opposition leaders. The controversy has also drawn in DMK president M. K. Stalin, who condemned the arrests and accused the TVK government of using its authority to intimidate political opponents. Stalin said the DMK had responded to Karthika’s earlier criticism through political debate rather than arrests. Seeman, meanwhile, alleged political vendetta and demanded the release of Karthika and other NTK functionaries. These are allegations made by political leaders; the legal proceedings and evidence will determine the merits of the cases. Why was Karthika arrested weeks after the campaign incident? Are the police actions justified under the law, or do they raise concerns about political freedom and the treatment of opposition voices? And how has the DMK responded to the controversy surrounding the TVK government? In this episode of Imperfect Show, we examine the circumstances surrounding Karthika’s arrest, the reactions from NTK and DMK leaders, and the wider debate over police powers, political dissent and accountability in Tamil Nadu.

Heavy rainfall has battered Chennai, causing severe waterlogging in several neighbourhoods and disrupting traffic. Parts of the city recorded more than 30 cm of rain overnight, raising fresh concerns about drainage infrastructure, flood preparedness and the effectiveness of monsoon mitigation measures. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay visited the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Ripon Building to review the situation, assess relief operations and direct officials to intensify flood-prevention work. The government reported that flood-prone areas had been identified and relief centres prepared for residents affected by the downpour. Vijay had also instructed ministers appointed to oversee Chennai’s zones to return to the city and supervise relief and rescue operations. The absence of Chennai Mayor R. Priya from the inspection meeting, along with questions about the participation of other elected civic representatives, has sparked political debate. Opposition leaders have questioned the government’s preparedness and response time, while the administration has highlighted the deployment of civic workers, equipment and emergency resources. Were sufficient precautions taken before the heavy rain? Why were some ministers and civic representatives reportedly absent from key reviews? How much progress has been made on Chennai’s long-term drainage and flood-control projects? In this episode, we examine the government’s response, the questions raised by the DMK and other political voices, and the challenges facing Chennai as the northeast monsoon intensifies. In this edition of Imperfect Show, we discuss the Chennai rain situation, CM Vijay’s review of relief measures, political criticism of the TVK government and the wider debate over accountability and urban flood preparedness.

Indian stock markets came under renewed selling pressure on October 19, with the Sensex falling around 876 points and the Nifty slipping below the 23,000 mark. Private banking and IT stocks were among the key contributors to the decline, while elevated crude oil prices and uncertainty surrounding quarterly earnings added to investor concerns. What triggered the sudden reversal after last week’s recovery, and could volatility continue? Sugar stocks also faced sharp declines after the government directed oil marketing companies to stop diverting sugarcane juice, sugar syrup and B-heavy molasses for ethanol production during the 2026–27 supply year. The move aims to increase domestic sugar availability and control prices, but it has raised concerns about margins and returns on ethanol investments for sugar producers. Meanwhile, attention is turning to the upcoming Jio Platforms IPO, scheduled to open on October 21. The offering has generated interest around Jio’s 5G business, broadband expansion and artificial intelligence opportunities. Investors will also be watching the valuation, growth prospects and risks associated with the offering.  With crude oil prices remaining elevated amid geopolitical tensions, when could oil prices stabilise, and what might that mean for India’s inflation, currency and stock markets? In this episode of IPS Finance, we analyse the sudden decline in sugar, IT and banking shares, the latest Jio IPO developments, and the factors that could shape crude oil prices and market sentiment. This discussion is for market awareness and is not personalised investment advice.

Delhi’s women’s safety crisis has come under renewed scrutiny after at least 13 alleged rape and sexual assault cases were reported across Delhi and neighbouring NCR districts during September 2026. The cases involved women, children and teenagers in homes, hotels and public spaces. The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of reports about the incidents and drew painful parallels with the 2012 Nirbhaya case, raising serious questions about public safety, policing and the responsibilities of law-enforcement authorities. The allegations against the accused in individual cases remain subject to investigation and judicial process. The episode also celebrates the musical legacy of veteran Tamil composer Deva, popularly known as “Thenisai Thendral,” who passed away in Chennai on October 17, 2026, at the age of 75. Across a career spanning nearly four decades and more than 400 films, Deva became known for his memorable melodies, energetic gaana songs and iconic soundtracks, including music for Annamalai, Baashha, Aasai and Kushi. His contribution helped bring Chennai’s gaana music into mainstream Tamil cinema, leaving a lasting mark on generations of listeners. We also examine El Niño and its possible impact on India’s climate, agriculture and economy. The India Meteorological Department has indicated that El Niño conditions could strengthen during October–December 2026, potentially affecting weather patterns. However, the impact on rainfall and agriculture depends on several interacting climate factors, so outcomes remain uncertain. In this episode of Imperfect Show, we discuss women’s safety and police accountability, revisit Deva’s unforgettable musical hits, and explore the potential implications of El Niño for India.

The protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls have triggered a fresh controversy after Delhi Police detained demonstrators, activists and political figures demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) accused the authorities of detaining its leaders without adequately disclosing their whereabouts, while police maintained that preventive action was taken to manage public order. With further protests taking place in Delhi, questions have emerged about the handling of demonstrations, civil liberties and the right to peaceful protest. Meanwhile, a major drug seizure in Tamil Nadu has sparked a political controversy after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence detained TVK functionary N. Boopalan and others in connection with an alleged methamphetamine-smuggling network in Nagapattinam. Reports say a large quantity of the synthetic drug was seized, with the investigation examining suspected links to smuggling operations involving Sri Lanka. TVK has expelled Boopalan from the party. The allegations remain subject to investigation, and the accused are entitled to due process. The episode also remembers veteran Tamil music composer Deva, popularly known as “Thenisai Thendral,” who passed away in Chennai on October 17, 2026, at the age of 75. Known for his distinctive melodies and contribution to Tamil cinema and gaana music, Deva leaves behind a lasting musical legacy. In this episode of Imperfect Show, we examine the questions surrounding the SIR protests and police detentions, the political fallout from the TVK functionary’s arrest, and the life and legacy of composer Deva.

Investing in the stock market offers opportunities to build wealth, but losses can occur when investors chase quick profits, follow unverified tips or make decisions driven by fear and greed. How can investors manage risk more effectively? This episode explores the importance of understanding a company’s fundamentals, diversifying investments, setting realistic financial goals and avoiding impulsive trading. While losses cannot be eliminated entirely, informed decisions and disciplined investing can help investors manage risk. The discussion also explores a deeper question: How much money does a person really need to feel satisfied? Does earning more necessarily lead to greater happiness, or does financial security, manageable expenses and freedom from debt matter more? We examine the relationship between money, lifestyle, financial independence and personal satisfaction. The episode also introduces Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs), a category of investment products designed to offer more flexible strategies than conventional mutual funds. With a minimum investment threshold of ₹10 lakh for most investors, SIFs are aimed at those who understand the risks associated with more complex investment strategies. But how do they differ from traditional mutual funds, what risks should investors consider, and are they suitable for every investor? In this episode of IPS Finance, we discuss practical ways to manage stock-market risk, the meaning of financial satisfaction and the opportunities and risks associated with SIFs. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has triggered a political debate in Tamil Nadu, with questions being raised about the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s position under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. While TVK has consistently opposed the SIR process, it initially stopped short of supporting its Congress ally’s demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. TVK leaders argued that opposing SIR did not mean questioning the validity of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election results or endorsing demands for fresh elections. The party’s position came under renewed scrutiny when TVK joined Congress and other INDIA bloc constituents in a Chennai protest on October 15, demanding action against the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in SIR. The development raised questions about whether TVK had changed its approach or was continuing to distinguish its opposition to voter-roll revision from the wider demand for the CEC’s removal. Meanwhile, the DMK criticised the Congress–TVK arrangement and questioned the consistency of the alliance’s position. Has TVK’s position on SIR actually changed, or is the party trying to balance its own political interests with those of its alliance partners? What are the implications for Vijay, Congress, DMK and the broader opposition movement? We also examine the role of the CJP protest and the wider debate over electoral transparency and voter rights. In this episode of Imperfect Show, we analyse TVK’s statements and actions, the questions raised by its political opponents, and the evolving debate over SIR and the Election Commission. Allegations of voter manipulation remain contested and are presented as claims made by political leaders, not as established findings.

Indian mutual fund houses have temporarily restricted fresh investments in certain gold-related mutual fund schemes, raising questions among investors who use gold funds to diversify their portfolios. Reports indicate that several fund houses have paused new subscriptions to Gold ETF Fund of Funds (FoFs) following discussions with market regulator SEBI. However, this does not mean that all forms of gold investment are banned: gold ETFs can still be traded on stock exchanges, while the terms governing existing investments and SIPs may vary by scheme. What prompted these restrictions, and what should investors understand before making their next move? Meanwhile, silver investors are facing renewed volatility. International silver prices dropped sharply amid stronger-than-expected US inflation data, a stronger dollar and rising bond yields. With silver also influenced by industrial demand, supply conditions and expectations for US interest rates, is the recent correction an opportunity or a warning sign? We examine the factors investors should watch before taking exposure to silver. The episode also looks at Tesla and the latest Q2 results, exploring the business and earnings developments that could influence market sentiment and commodity-linked sectors. In this edition of Commodity Market Special, we break down the gold fund restrictions, the outlook for silver, Tesla-related developments and key Q2 earnings updates.
