In recent developments in the Bryan Kohberger case, Idaho Judge Steven Hippler has denied the defense's motion to exclude key DNA evidence. Kohberger, accused of murdering four University of Idaho students in 2022, argued that the use of Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) to link him to the crime scene violated his constitutional rights. However, Judge Hippler ruled that there is no reasonable expectation of privacy for DNA found at a crime scene, allowing the prosecution to use this evidence in the upcoming trial. Additionally, the judge upheld the admissibility of digital evidence from Kohberger's online accounts and cellphone data, as well as the legality of trash collection from his parents' home, further strengthening the prosecution's case.

In preparation for the trial, which is scheduled to begin in August 2025, Kohberger has added San Francisco attorney Bicka Barlow to his defense team. Barlow, an expert in DNA forensics, has been admitted pro hac vice, allowing her to represent Kohberger in Idaho despite being licensed in California. Her expertise is expected to play a crucial role in challenging the DNA evidence presented by the prosecution. If convicted, Kohberger faces the possibility of the death penalty.
