Prince Andrew assembled a high-powered legal team to fight Virginia Giuffre’s civil lawsuit, and reports at the time said some of the lawyers involved were charging as much as roughly £2,000 an hour. The legal battle was extraordinarily expensive, with Queen Elizabeth II reportedly helping cover Andrew’s mounting legal bills from her private funds. His attorneys aggressively tried to get the case dismissed, challenged Giuffre’s claims on several grounds and prepared for what could have become a bruising trial in New York. But Judge Lewis Kaplan rejected Andrew’s effort to have the lawsuit thrown out, clearing the way for discovery, a deposition and ultimately a jury trial if no agreement was reached.
Despite all of that legal firepower, Andrew ultimately chose not to fight Giuffre’s allegations before a jury. In February 2022, he reached an out-of-court settlement with her, ending the case before he was required to sit for a scheduled deposition and testify under oath. The exact settlement amount was never officially disclosed, though reports placed the overall cost in the millions, and Andrew made no admission of liability. The decision was striking because his legal team had previously taken an aggressive posture and Andrew had repeatedly denied Giuffre’s allegations, yet when the case survived dismissal and the prospect of sworn testimony and a public trial became real, the litigation ended with a settlement instead.
