Allegations that JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has not been fully truthful about what he knew regarding Jeffrey Epstein center largely on a direct contradiction between Dimon’s sworn testimony and that of former JPMorgan executive Jes Staley. During his 2023 deposition in litigation over the bank’s relationship with Epstein, Dimon said he did not recall discussing Epstein with Staley and maintained that he had essentially no knowledge of Epstein or his accounts while Epstein was a client. Staley, however, testified that he spoke with Dimon about Epstein after Epstein’s 2006 arrest, again after his 2008 guilty plea, and at other points concerning whether the bank should continue doing business with him. Court filings highlighted that conflict directly, leaving two senior figures giving sharply different sworn accounts about whether Epstein had reached the attention of JPMorgan’s chief executive years before the bank finally terminated the relationship in 2013.

The questions surrounding Dimon intensified because internal JPMorgan records showed that Epstein was repeatedly discussed at high levels of the bank. Employees raised concerns about him for years, and in 2011 JPMorgan general counsel Stephen Cutler wrote to senior executives Mary Erdoes and Staley that Epstein was “not an honorable person” and should no longer be a client. Dimon testified that he was unaware of that warning at the time, but critics have argued that it strains credibility that a client as controversial and valuable as Epstein could remain inside JPMorgan for years while senior executives, compliance personnel and legal officials discussed the risks without the CEO ever being informed. None of that proves Dimon lied under oath, but the contradiction between his account, Staley’s testimony and the documentary record has fueled continuing allegations that Dimon knew more about Epstein’s status at the bank than he has publicly acknowledged.
