Something a little different: this episode is an overview of Blackbelt Parenting, an unpublished book I wrote about principles from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts and how they can be applied to relationships and parenting.I sent the manuscript to Google Notebook LM and it created this episode. Zach Tidwell is a completely blind Marine Corps veteran and suicide survivor sharing his story in hopes of saving lives and getting our society to have the tougher conversations we tend to avoid. After serving honorably as a machine gunner for four years, Zach reached the point where he didn’t want to be alive anymore. Everything looked fine from the outside— he was working and going to school full-time and keeping up appearances, but he was dying inside. An unfortunate combination of personal circumstances, head injuries, and a lack of healthy coping skills led him to stay silent whilst self-medicating with alcohol. On March 31, 2019, he held a gun between his eyes and pulled the trigger. The attempt left him completely blind and deaf in one ear, but he had a new perspective and has entirely redefined himself in the years since. Today he’s a self-taught, award-winning software developer and entrepreneur making the digital world a more accessible place for everyone. He’s a speaker, and he’s working on the second draft of a memoir that dives into all of his struggles and successes, mistakes and triumphs. He’s also an athlete— he skis, rock climbs, whitewater kayaks, surfs, and even competes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu against people without any disabilities— amongst other things. My guest for this episode of The Courage, Coaching and Couneling Podcast is Dr. Mark M. McNear. Mark is a Licensed Psychotherapist who has over thirty years of experience in clinical work through his private practice in New Jersey. He is a graduate of Northeastern Bible College, New York University, and Oxford Graduate School. Dr. McNear specializes in helping people who have experienced trauma in their life, as well as the maladaptive behaviors that spring forth from their woundedness. Six months since the last episode! I&#39;m still alive! Been a busy year with family and BJJ. I&#39;ve been training and coaching more Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since earning my black belt in Jan after 23 years. I also started the Sovann Pen BJJ YouTube channel and The Uncle Wristlock Podcast.
