A T-score can tell you that bone density is low, but it cannot tell you the whole story.

It cannot tell you why someone lost bone, whether the results are influenced by factors like arthritis or degeneration, whether bone quality is compromised, or whether the person has the muscle, nutrition, hormones, and metabolic support needed to reduce fracture risk.

In this episode of ReInvent Healthcare, Dr. Ritamarie explores why practitioners need to look beyond the T-score when evaluating bone health.

She discusses the strengths and limitations of conventional DEXA, full-body DEXA, EchoLight REMS, Fragility Score, and Trabecular Bone Score (TBS), and how each tool provides a different piece of information about bone density, bone quality, and fracture risk.

The test gives us data, but the practitioner creates meaning.

You’ll discover why interpreting bone testing requires more than looking at a single number and how to combine imaging with the bigger clinical picture, including muscle mass, falls, medications, hormones, inflammation, nutrition, digestion, and metabolic health.

What’s Inside This Episode?

  • Why the T-score is important but never the complete bone health story
  • What conventional DEXA can tell you and what it may miss
  • Why an improved scan result does not always mean healthier bone
  • The difference between bone density, bone quality, and fracture risk
  • Why muscle mass, strength, balance, and movement are critical parts of fracture risk assessment
  • How full-body DEXA provides insight into body composition and the muscle-bone connection
  • What newer tools like EchoLight REMS, Fragility Score, and TBS may add to the clinical picture
  • Why trends over time matter more than reacting to a single scan result
  • The common mistakes practitioners make when interpreting bone testing
  • How to combine imaging, labs, nutrition, hormones, movement, and metabolic health to understand the whole person

If you support people experiencing osteopenia, osteoporosis, fracture risk, menopause-related bone loss, sarcopenia, metabolic challenges, or confusing bone test results, this episode will help you think more clearly about what the numbers actually mean.
