From the king of “coming of age” Richard Linklater, we’re covering the film adaptation of the Eric Bogosian play SUBURBIA about a bunch of white suburban teenagers figuring out their futures while hanging outside a corner-store gas station. Starring Giovanni Ribisi, Amie Carey, Steve Zahn, Parker Posey, Nicky Katt, and Jayce Bartok. A darkly comic drama depicting a slice of American culture through the perspective of a bunch of dysfunctional teens dealing with the baggage that has crept into their lives and their constant observations about the world around them. There’s tragedy. There are $2.79 6-pack PBR’s. And oh, but plenty of tragedy, let’s not forget. In short, try to be more like Steve Zahn!

Wife and husband duo Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson join forces to bring to life an incredibly popular book from the early 2000s that has had its fair share of controversy. But what do we care? Sam has her husband strip down and dance in the opening sequence.  Joined by beloved actors Giovanni Ribisi, Juliette Lewis, Charlie Hunnam, David Dastmalchian, Billy Bob Thornton (I could go on), this film with a stacked cast is not one that will leave you brain for a while. That and many more questions will be asked and answered in Harry Lighton’s exploration of Gay biker subculture in the UK and the dynamics of that in PILLION. Starring Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling, the relationship between Ray and Colin is a romantic comedy that transcends. All made for about $1 million. It’s fun. It’s enjoyable. It is more graphic than something regarded as a “rom-com” would normally permit, but that doesn’t take away from the earnestness of the story and the connections you have to the characters.

We cannot escape the tempting clutches of Peter Weller, it seems. Unfortunately, this time, we are at a loss.  Elmore Leonard's CAT CHASER, adapted by Abel Ferrara (covered when we uncovered BAD LIEUTENANT), starring Weller and Kelly McGillis. What could go wrong? A lot supposedly. A troubled script process. Warring co-stars. Abel Ferrara.  For a film that depicts mostly a bunch of conversations in rooms and locations with very little action, there were a tonne of accidents and near-fatal incidents on this shoot. Kelly proclaimed, "I WILL NEVER ACT AGAIN!" and took a 6-month hiatus. This film is rare. There is even a rarer 3-hr slop print that exists on videotape in the film archives. You might have to deal with the DVD-quality version on Hoopla (support your local library).

Dropping you into a modern rendition of Tolstoy, like it's the early 2000's, here we are with Bernard Rose's IVANSXTC.  A breakthrough in "digital filmmaking," it became the first feature to be shot on digital HD, revolutionizing what became a very popular aesthetic, especially in television. Starring Danny Huston, we follow the death and final days of Ivan, a popular talent agent in Hollywood who's all about the decadence of the lifestyle and hanging with his most popular client, played by Peter Weller.  Oh, yeah, ROBOCOP himself! If the inclusion of Peter Weller and HD video didn't grab you, literally nothing will!

Before SURVIVOR was popular, people in the 1920's would find themselves on an isolated, inhospitable island, driven by survival and searching for that one piece of personal peace and salvation.Ron Howard's EDEN kinda does that with a bunch of sexy actors enacting the true story of a group of people setting up life in the Galapagos Islands. What ensues is a pinch of madness. A crumble of humanity and plenty of foul behavior.Depending on who you speak to, this is either "not bad" or "straight down the middle". That equates to a whole bunch of mediocrity. But it's coming out near Valentine's so, all is forgiven!

You might tell fairly quickly that we're all a bit sad at this one.Liliana Cavani's THE NIGHT PORTER makes you ask certain questions. Makes you feel certain things. Makes you feel awful. Equally bleak. Equally grim. Equally sad. Yeah, "sad" is the word of the day. You won't enjoy yourself unless you like the idea of seeing a version of this with an "ALL PUPPET CAST" to give us some well-needed levity. Writing this blurb is difficult. I've tried rewriting it at least three times, and I'm at the point of failing to explain myself, my partner, and the guy who's putting the film on at Sunray Cinema in Tampa on Saturday, January 17th, 2026, as part of Uncomfortable Brunch! We should all be disgusted with ourselves for enjoying it. Speaking of Uncomfortable Brunch, friend of the podcast Josh Martin joins us for this discussion!A film by Todd Rohal (anyone familiar with his work will know how messed up it is) and based on the comic by alternative cartoonist Johnny Ryan, this is a dark, mean-spirited comedy about a young man's mother meeting a woman and her child, and what ensues is carnage. Utter, utter carnage.Hold onto your seats with your clammy palms, my friends, this is a "bumpy" ride that is definitely for ADULTS ONLY!

Happy New Year, Geeks! What better way to start the New Year than with the neo-noir, psychological thriller by master Guillermo Del Toro: NIGHTMARE ALLEY.Based on the novel of the same name from 1946, this is a new adaptation of the source material. And Bradley Cooper is actually good! Ha!

What's more Christmas-y than celebrating one's birthday? Brian just so happens to share the same birthday with someone else we might know, on Christmas Day, many, many moons ago. It seems almost to explain what this film is, because who hasn't seen this and enjoyed it? I mean, it was controversial upon its release and was banned by many councils, even to this day, but who hasn't heard or seen LIFE OF BRIAN at this point? Regardless, you've heard of MONTY PYTHON, and this is easily their best film. This film gave us "big nose", the "ex leper", and "what have the Romans ever done for us?" Do yourself a favor and watch this. It's an absolute treat for this Festive Season!
