In this episode, Modern Mind therapist Yaron Schwartzman talks with John Barr about the complicated journey from boyhood into manhood—the pressure to prove oneself, the shame men often carry quietly, and the ways trauma can shape the body, relationships, and identity long after the original experience has passed.
John brings a rare perspective as a former filmmaker, soldier, medic, and social worker. He worked at the New York medical examiner’s office investigating accidental overdoses and supporting surviving family members, and he now works on a reservation in New Mexico, where he continues to witness how trauma moves through families and communities. Together, Yaron and John explore military service as both structure and rite of passage, what happens when men return home without a uniform to define them, and the difficult work of meeting the child beneath the armor.
This is a conversation about fathers and sons, shame and anger, and the possibility that healing does not always mean becoming tougher. Sometimes it means becoming softer, more honest, and more connected.
