S4E4: Celebrating the Oxi day in Greece

In this episode, we talk about the 28th of October (28η Οκτωβρίου) in Greece. The 28th of October is a big Natioanl Holiday for our country, and today we will talk about how we honor that day every year!E: Να σου πω, εσείς είστε έτοιμοι για την 28η; /Tell me, are you all ready for the 28th?D: Σχεδόν! Μόνο τα παπούτσια μένουν να πάρουμε, αλλά θα πάμε το Σάββατο. Εσείς; /Almost! We just need to get the shoes, but we’ll go on Saturday. How about you?E: Κι εμείς έτοιμοι! Ευτυχώς κάνουν ακόμα στα παιδιά τα ρούχα από την περσινή γιορτή, οπότε δεν χρειάστηκε να πάμε για ψώνια. Φέτος όμως είχαν πιο δύσκολα ποιήματα και κάναμε πολλές πρόβες. Εσένα θα συμμετέχουν στην γιορτή; /We’re ready too! Luckily, the kids’ clothes from last year’s celebration still fit, so we didn’t need to go shopping. But this year, they had harder poems, and we practiced a lot. Are yours taking part in the celebration?D: Ναι! Κι εμένα δυσκολεύτηκαν λίγο με τα ποιήματα, αλλά νομίζω μέχρι τις 27 του μηνός που είναι η γιορτή θα είναι πανέτοιμοι και οι δύο. Η μεγάλη θα είναι στην χορευτική ομάδα και η μικρή στην χορωδία! /Yes! Mine had a bit of trouble with the poems too, but I think by the 27th—the day of the celebration—they’ll both be fully ready. The older one will be in the dance group, and the younger one in the choir!E: Τέλειο! Πήρατε και στολές για τους χορούς ή δεν σας ζήτησαν; /That’s great! Did you get costumes for the dances, or didn’t they ask for any?D: Νοίκιασε κάποιες ο σύλλογος γονέων και κηδεμόνων, οπότε μόλις τελειώσει η γιορτή θα τις επιστρέψουμε. Εσείς όμως θα είστε και στην μεγάλη παρέλαση, σωστά; /The parents’ association rented some, so once the celebration is over, we’ll return them. But you’ll also be in the big parade, right?Ε: Ακόμα καλύτερα έτσι! Ναι! Και οι δύο φέτος θα είναι στην μεγάλη παρέλαση στο κέντρο… Είναι λίγο αγχωμένοι θα έλεγα. Θα έχει πολύ κόσμο! /Even better that way! Yes! Both of them will be in the big parade downtown this year… I’d say they’re a bit nervous. There will be a lot of people!D: Λογικό! Θα έρθουμε να τους δούμε οπωσδήποτε! Τι ώρα είναι; /Understandable! We’ll definitely come to watch them! What time does it start?Ε: 10 η ώρα αρχίζει. /It starts at 10 o’clock.D: Τέλεια! Θα σας δούμε εκεί λοιπόν! /Perfect! We’ll see you there then!E: Ωραία! Καλά να περάσετε στην γιορτή! /Great! In today's episode we will talk about the "Back to school" period in September and how it looks like in Greece. We will also talk about some traditions and preparations for the new school year.E: Καλό μήνα! Επιστρέψατε από τις διακοπές; /Happy new month! Did you come back from vacation?D: Ναι! Ετοιμαζόμαστε για την επιστροφή στο σχολείο. Εσείς; /Yes! We’re getting ready for back to school. How about you?Ε: Εμείς γυρνάμε αύριο από το χωριό και τα παιδιά δεν θέλουν να φύγουν με τίποτα! / We’re coming back from the village tomorrow, and the kids don’t want to leave at all!D: Μία από τα ίδια κι εμείς όταν φύγαμε από τους παππούδες. Πού να δεις χαρές που θα κάνουν στις 11 Σεπτεμβρίου που θα ανοίξουν και πάλι τα σχολεία. / Same with us when we left the grandparents. Just wait till you see how happy they’ll be on September 11th when school starts again.Ε: Τι τάξη θα πάνε φέτος; / What grade are they going to this year?D: Η Μαρία θα πάει πρώτη Λυκείου και ο Παναγιώτης Δευτέρα Γυμνασίου. Εσένα; / Maria is going to 10th grade (first year of high school) and Panagiotis to 8th grade (second year of middle school). Yours?Ε: Ουάου! Η Μαρία τελειώνει το σχολείο σιγά σιγά! Εμένα ο μεγάλος θα πάει Τετάρτη Δημοτικού και ο μικρός νηπιαγωγείο. / Wow! Maria is slowly finishing school! My oldest is going to 3rd grade in primary school, and the little one to kindergarten. D: Άντε με το καλό. Και από του χρόνου στο Δημοτικό και ο Γιώργος! / That’s great. And next year George will be in elementary too!Ε: Ναι, αυτός χαίρεται λίγο περισσότερο για την επιστροφή στο σχολείο από τον Ανδρέα! / Yes, he’s actually a bit more excited about going back to school than Andreas is!D: Λογικό! Το ίδιο και η Μαρία… αγχώνεται πολύ που μπαίνει στο Λύκειο φέτος./ Makes sense! Same with Maria… she’s very stressed about starting high school this year.Ε: Το φαντάζομαι. Εμείς αύριο θα πάμε να πάρουμε μία  καινούργια τσάντα και ένα παγούρι για τον μικρό. Θέλεις να έρθεις; / I can imagine. Tomorrow we’re going to buy a new school bag and a water bottle for the little one. Want to come along?D: Φέτος λέμε να χρησιμοποιήσουν τις περσινές τσάντες και κασετίνες και για τα υπόλοιπα σχολικά είδη θα πάμε αφού ξεκινήσουν τα σχολεία και ξέρουμε τι χρειάζονται. Μπορούμε όμως να κανονίσουμε έναν καφέ πριν μπούμε στη ρουτίνα. / This year we decided they’ll use last year’s bags and pencil cases, and for the rest of the school supplies we’ll shop after classes begin, once we know what they need. But we can definitely plan a coffee before we get back into routine.Ε: Εννοείται! Μέσα στο Σαββατοκύριακο θα είμαι ελεύθερη, πάμε όποτε θες! / Of course! In today's episode we will talk about the Imperative mood in Greek. Emily and Danai will first engage in a dialogue with suggestions of what to do in Thessaloniki and then explain the use of the Imperative mood.D: Emily, I want to visit Thessaloniki! What do you suggest I do there?E: Oh, perfect! You’ll have an amazing time! First of all, take a walk along the beach to see the White Tower up close and climb all the way to the top. The view is incredible!D:I already love this idea! Where else should I go?E: Go to the Upper Town and the Castles. There, you’ll see the Heptapyrgion, and of course, the view of the entire city from above. Also, visit the Hagia Sophia, the Rotunda, and the Church of Saint Demetrius—they’re among the most historic churches in the city.D:I probably won’t be able to do all of this in one day, right?Ε:Most likely not. It’s better to plan on needing two to three days to see all of that, plus maybe visit a museum, like the Archaeological or Byzantine Museum, which are both in the city center.D: Alright then. What about food? What should I try?E: Well, definitely take a walk around Ladadika for lunch, and also go there in the evening for drinks. Of course, after that, for dessert, you should try "trigona Panorama," and for breakfast, at least once, have bougatsa with cream.D: Wow! Everything sounds delicious! There’s no way I’m not trying "trigona"! Everyone’s telling me about them!Ε: They’re definitely amazing! But there are also lots of other syrupy sweets to try.D: Got it… I’m going for gastronomic tourism! Ε: Yes! And don’t forget to walk around Aristotelous Square and have a freddo.D: Of course, I can’t wait for a proper freddo espresso!Ε: You have to!D: It looks like I’ll need to write all this down so I don’t forget!Ε: Good idea! Make a list for each day so you can manage to see and do everything!D: I think I’ll really like Thessaloniki because there’s so much to see and do!Ε: Exactly! In today's episode you will learn essential health and sickness related phrases in Greek. Emily and Danai will first engage in a dialogue talking about Emily's flu and then give you some more phrases we use when feeling under the weather.D: Έμιλυ, πώς πήγε η επίσκεψη στον γιατρό; Τι σου είπε; / Emily, how did the doctor’s visit go? What did he say?E: Δεν έχω απλό κρυολόγημα τελικά… Ο γιατρός μου είπε ότι έχω γρίπη. / It turns out I don’t just have a simple cold… The doctor told me I have the flu.D: Ωχ! Και ποια είναι τα συμπτώματά σου; / Oh no! And what are your symptoms?E: Έχω ανεβασμένο πυρετό, πονόλαιμο, δυνατό πονοκέφαλο, πόνους στα κόκαλα και συνάχι. Νιώθω εντελώς εξαντλημένη. /  I have a high fever, a sore throat, a bad headache, body aches, and a stuffy nose. I feel completely exhausted.D:Πωπωω, ταλαιπωρείσαι πολύ! Ζαλίζεσαι κιόλας; / Wow, you’re really suffering! Are you also feeling dizzy?Ε: Όχι πολύ. Είχα κάποιες ζαλάδες το πρωί αλλά τώρα σταμάτησαν και έχω μόνο ρίγος. / Not much. I had some dizziness this morning, but it stopped, and now I just have chills.D: Τι σου είπε να κάνεις; / What did the doctor tell you to do?E: Μου είπε να ξεκουραστώ όσο μπορώ, να πίνω πολλά υγρά και να πάρω παυσίπονα και αντιπυρετικά για τον πυρετό και τους πόνους. / He told me to rest as much as I can, drink lots of fluids, and take painkillers and fever reducers for the fever and the aches.D: Πρέπει να πάρεις αντιβίωση; / Do you need antibiotics?E: Όχι, προς το παρόν δεν χρειάζεται αντιβίωση. / No, for now, I don’t need antibiotics. D: Μάλιστα… Οπότε, απλά υπομονή και ξεκούραση! /  I see… So, just patience and rest for now!E: Ναι, ακριβώς! Αν ο πυρετός δεν πέσει σε λίγες μέρες, πρέπει να ξαναμιλήσω με τον γιατρό. / Yes, exactly! If the fever doesn’t go down in a few days, I’ll have to talk to the doctor again.D: Εντάξει, λοιπόν! Μείνε στο κρεβάτι, πιες πολλά υγρά, φάε πολλές σούπες και ξεκουράσου! / Alright then! Stay in bed, drink lots of fluids, eat lots of soups, and rest!Έ: Ναι, θα προσπαθήσω! Που τα έχετε; / Good morning, I'm looking for an evening dress. Where do you have them? D: Ναι βεβαίως, ελάτε μαζί μου… (pause) εδώ θα βρείτε τα βραδινά μας φορέματα. Σε τι χρώμα θέλετε; / Yes, of course, come with me… (pause) here you will find our evening dresses. What color are you looking for?E: Θέλω να δω κάτι σε κίτρινο ή εκρού. Θέλω κάτι ανοιχτόχρωμο. / I’d like to see something in yellow or ecru. I want something light-colored.D: Ναι τώρα το καλοκαίρι τα ανοιχτόχρωμα είναι ο,τι πρέπει. Πώς σας φαίνεται αυτό; / Yes, now in the summer, light colors are just perfect. In today's episode we will talk about the 1st of May in Greece. Emily will first engage in a conversation with Danae, about May 1st and then will explain the significance of this day for Greece.E:Δανάη, να σε ρωτήσω. Η Πρωτομαγιά είναι πράγματι μια ιδιαίτερη μέρα για την Ελλάδα; /Danae, can I ask you something? Is May Day really a special day in Greece?D:Σωστά! Η 1η Μαΐου ή Πρωτομαγιά, έχει διπλή σημασία στην Ελλάδα. Είναι η γιορτή της άνοιξης αλλά και ημέρα αφιερωμένη στα δικαιώματα των εργατών. /That’s right! May 1st, or “Protomagia,” has a double meaning in Greece. It’s a celebration of spring, but also a day dedicated to workers' rights.E:Ας ξεκινήσουμε με τον παραδοσιακό εορτασμό. Τι κάνετε συνήθως εκείνη την ημέρα; /Let’s start with the traditional celebration. What do you usually do on that day?D:Συνήθως πηγαίνουμε εκδρομές στην εξοχή ή στη θάλασσα με οικογένεια και φίλους. Κάνουμε πικνίκ ή πηγαίνουμε σε κάποια ταβέρνα για φαγητό. /We usually go on trips to the countryside or to the sea with family and friends. We have picnics or go to a taverna for food.E:Πολύ ωραίο ακούγεται! Και έχω ακούσει κάτι για λουλουδένια στεφάνια; /That sounds lovely! And I’ve heard something about flower wreaths?D:Ναι! Ένα από τα πιο γνωστά έθιμα είναι να φτιάχνουμε στεφάνια από λουλούδια και αρωματικά φυτά. Αυτά τα στεφάνια τα κρεμάμε στις πόρτες των σπιτιών για καλή τύχη και συμβολίζουν τον ερχομό της άνοιξης. /Yes! One of the most well-known customs is making wreaths out of flowers and aromatic plants. We hang these wreaths on the doors of our houses for good luck, and they symbolize the arrival of spring.E:Μου θυμίζει αρχαίες ελληνικές παραδόσεις! /It reminds me of ancient Greek traditions!D:Πολύ σωστά! Η Πρωτομαγιά έχει ρίζες στην αρχαιότητα, όταν οι άνθρωποι λάτρευαν τη φύση και γιόρταζαν τη ζωή και την άνοιξη. /Exactly! May Day has roots in antiquity, when people worshipped nature and celebrated life and spring.E:Κατάλαβα. Και σχετικά με τα δικαιώματα των εργατών που είπες πριν; /I see. And what about the workers’ rights you mentioned earlier?D:Η 1η Μαΐου, όπως και σε πολλές άλλες χώρες, είναι επίσης γνωστή και ως Εργατική Πρωτομαγιά και είναι μέρα που χρησιμοποιείται για να τιμήσουμε τα δικαιώματα των εργαζομένων. /May 1st, like in many other countries, is also known as Labor Day and is a day used to honor workers’ rights.E:Άρα γίνονται και διαδηλώσεις ή πορείες για εκείνη την ημέρα; /So are there also protests or marches on that day?D:Ναι, κυρίως σε μεγάλες πόλεις όπως είναι η Αθήνα και η Θεσσαλονίκη. Εκεί γίνονται συγκεντρώσεις για τα εργασιακά δικαιώματα τιμώντας τους αγώνες των εργαζομένων. /Yes, especially in big cities like Athens and Thessaloniki. There are rallies for labor rights to honor workers’ struggles.E:Και πότε έγινε η πρώτη εργατική απεργία στην Ελλάδα; /And when was the first labor strike in Greece?D:Η πρώτη έγινε το 1893, και από τότε, η Πρωτομαγιά είναι σημαντική για το εργατικό κίνημα. /The first one was in 1893, and since then, May Day has been important for the labor movement.E:Μου φαίνεται πολύ ενδιαφέρον το πώς η Πρωτομαγιά συνδυάζει τη γιορτή της φύσης με τους εργατικούς αγώνες. /I find it really interesting how May Day combines the celebration of nature with labor struggles.D:Ακριβώς! Και ο καθένας βρίσκει τον δικό του τρόπο να τη γιορτάσει. /Exactly! In today's episode you will learn the simple past tense in Greek. Emily will first engage in a conversation with Danae, describing her day in Athens and then will explain how to use and form the simple past.D: Πώς πέρασες στην Αθήνα; / How was your time in Athens?E: Ήταν απίστευτη εμπειρία! Η Αθήνα έχει τόσα πολλά να δεις και να κάνεις! / It was an incredible experience! Athens has so much to see and do!D: Για πες! Τι έκανες όλη μέρα; / Tell me! What did you do all day?E: Το πρωί ξύπνησα νωρίς και αφού έφαγα ένα τέλειο πρωινό γιαούρτι με φρούτα, πήγα στην Ακρόπολη. Επισκέφτηκα τον Παρθενώνα και θαύμασα τη θέα από ψηλά. Μετά κατέβηκα στο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης και συναντήθηκα με τη φίλη μου την Ελένη, που μένει στην Αθήνα. / In the morning I woke up early and after having a perfect breakfast—yogurt with fruit—I went to the Acropolis. I visited the Parthenon and admired the view from above. Then I went down to the Acropolis Museum and met up with my friend Eleni, who lives in Athens.D: Τέλεια! Έχει πάρα πολλά εκθέματα και οργανωμένα με ωραίο τρόπο. / I really liked it! It has so many exhibits and they’re very well organized.D: Κι εγώ αυτό έχω ακούσει. Έκανες τίποτα άλλο μετά ή πήγες πίσω στο ξενοδοχείο. / That’s what I’ve heard too. Did you do anything else after that or did you go back to the hotel?Έ: Ναι, μετά πήγαμε βόλτα στην Αρεοπαγίτου και περπατήσαμε μέχρι το Θησείο. Στη συνέχεια περάσαμε από το Μοναστηράκι, είδαμε τα παλιά μαγαζιά και εγώ αγόρασα μερικά αναμνηστικά. / Yeah, afterward we took a walk along Areopagitou Street and walked all the way to Thiseio. Then we passed through Monastiraki, saw the old shops, and I bought some souvenirs.D: Δοκίμασες και ελληνικό φαγητό; / Did you try any Greek food?Ε: Εννοείται! Το μεσημέρι έφαγα σε ένα ταβερνάκι στην Πλάκα. Παρήγγειλα μουσακά και μια χωριάτικη σαλάτα, αλλά δοκίμασα και από το παστίτσιο της φίλης μου. / Of course! At lunch I ate at a little taverna in Plaka. I ordered moussaka and a Greek salad, and I also tasted some of my friend’s pastitsio.D: Πολύ ωραία επιλογή! Το απόγευμα τι έκανες; / Great choices! What did you do in the afternoon?E: Πήγαμε στο Σύνταγμα και είδαμε την αλλαγή φρουράς μπροστά στη Βουλή. Μετά πήραμε έναν καφέ στο χέρι και περπατήσαμε στον Εθνικό Κήπο. / We went to Syntagma and watched the changing of the guard in front of Parliament. Then we grabbed a coffee to go and walked through the National Garden.D: Και το βράδυ; / And in the evening?E: Το βράδυ ανεβήκαμε στον Λυκαβηττό και είδαμε το ηλιοβασίλεμα. Η θέα της Αθήνας από ψηλά ήταν μαγική! / In the evening we went up to Lycabettus Hill and watched the sunset. The view of Athens from up there was magical!D: Ακούγεται σαν πολύ γεμάτη αλλά και φανταστική μέρα! / Sounds like a packed but amazing day!E: Ήταν όντως λίγο κουραστική, όμως πέρασα τέλεια! Η Αθήνα είναι υπέροχη πόλη! / It was a bit tiring, but I had a great time!
